  2. Alice Sebold Alice writes her books as a reflection on her past life when she was raped and attacked in college. She finds it as a way to express herself, and to let others know her story. The Lovely Bones The Almost Moon Lucky

  3. Susie Salmon Is a 14-year-old girl who is raped and then murdered in the beginning of the book. Susie is the one telling her story throughout the book from heaven. She tries to help her family discover her murderer.

  4. George Harvey Is the serial killer who rapes and murders Susie. He gets away with the murder and continues to do the same thing to other girls. He ends up moving away from where he killed Susie and never returns. In the end Mr. Harvey ends up dying from an icicle falling and hitting him in the head. He ends up falling down a cliff where police find him weeks later.

  5. Jack Salmon Is the father of Susie. He was the one who was determined to find the killer of his daughter. It impacted his marriage and his other kids. He believed that it was George Harvey who killed Susie. Nobody would listen to him.

  6. Abigail Salmon Lindsey Salmon

  7. Exposition Susie Salmon starts off talking about things she likes to do, and things she wished she could have done. Susie starts explaining how she got to heaven and why she is there.

  8. Rising Action Susie runs into Mr. Harvey in the corn field. He wants to show her an underground room he made. Things start to get weird when he locks the door behind them and there is no where to go. Mr. Harvey starts asking Susie personal questions and she asks if she can leave but he won’t let her. That’s when he rapes her and then murders her.

  9. Climax Susie’s family finds out that Susie was murdered. They start investigating it and have everyone they know help. Jack wants to prove that Mr. Harvey did it and he won’t stop until he does.

  10. Falling action The police have no evidence that Mr. Harvey killed Susie so there is nothing they can do anymore. Jack and Abigail’s marriage starts to fall apart, and it also impacts the other kids. Abigail has an affair with Len Fenerman (the detective). She ends up leaving Jack and her kids.

  11. Resolution After many years passed Len Fenerman decides to re-examine the evidence from Susie’s murder, he realizes that Jack was right. Jack had a heart attack which brought Abigail back home, and she ends up staying. Mr. Harvey ends up dying from and icicle hitting his head and falling off a cliff. Susie is satisfied knowing her family is back together and they know the truth.

  12. Setting Time Period:1973 People could get away with more things then. DNA and missing person databases as well as linked databases for criminals didn’t really exist so the murderer was able to elude the police for years. Place: Pennsylvania, because that’s where the author grew up and was raised.

  13. Rating I chose to rate this book with an 8 because the ending was contrived. It was unrealistic.

  14. Themes Grief The author wants us to know that facing this overwhelming sense of loss is a long process for most and even longer for others. Love and Acceptance It isn’t just love for the dead person and acceptance of her death. It is also love and acceptance of the way those around her react to the tragedy. The truth is the realization that only with the ties, not the chains, can people begin again, renewed and ready to face life. Good versus Evil We see the serial killer as he evolved into the monster he became and, at the same time, we almost sympathize with him for having been a victim of an environment that might have made monsters of any of us. However, Susie, who represents good, wants his death for the most serious reason possible - she wants to protect all women and girls from him. In the end, she has to release her desire for revenge and concentrate on what is good for everyone, both living and dead. So, she releases it by contributing to his death and the walking away emotionally from him. Mr. Harvey has no chains to hold her anymore, he will never hurt any other girl or woman, and good triumphs over evil.

  20. Lost InnocenceAnonymous • Seeing a child's innocent face • Knowing that things aren't as they appear • For inside she cries silent tears • Deep inside she is filled with pain • She feels dirty and full of shame • Innocence lost at a very young age • Locked this child in a pain filled cage • There is no freedom or escape • From the fact this child was raped • While the guilty man is roaming free • This child is sentenced to eternity • Eternity locked away with all this shame • She can't help but feel that she was to blame • Even though common sense says it was not her fault • She can't seem to help from having these thoughts • What ifs' keep running through her mind • She keeps going back to those moments in time • If there isn't something different she could have done • Why didn’t she scream or at least try to run • Fear kept her frozen to the spot • while this grown man did what he should have not • Shame and fear made her keep the silence • Kept her telling anyone about the violence • The thing that is shocking beyond belief • Is that this child could not get any relief • The same thing happened again and again • The first one was just how it began • More than one man did his worst • None of them caring about the child they hurt • After the first time was it easy to tell • Was it her pain and shame they could smell? • With every touch a part of her died • Every one of them sealing her fate • Now she is in a prison that has no gate

  21. Sublime-Date rape • Let me tell you about a girl I know,Had a drink about an hour ago.Sitting in a corner by herself, in a bar in downtown hell. She heard a noise and she looked through the door. And saw a man she’d never seen before.Light skin, light blue eyes, a double-chin and a plastic smile.Well, her eyebrow raised as he walked through the doorAnd took an empty seat next to her at the bar.’my brand new car is parked right outside. how’d ya like to go for a ride? ’And she said.’wait a minute I have to think.’He said, ’that’s fine. may I please buy you a drink’One drink turned into 3 or 4 and they left and got into his carAnd they drove away someplace real far.Now babe the time has come. How’d ya like to have a little fun? And she said.’ if we could only please be on our way, I will not run.’

  22. How to avoid an attack • Stay away from people that make you feel uncomfortable, and never be anywhere with them alone. • If someone asks you to go somewhere private alone with him, politely but firmly refuse • Walk with a friend if possible, especially if you're walking at night or in a remote location • Stay alert by avoiding headphones, or hats that block your peripheral vision. • Move with confidence. Someone who looks purposeful and physically capable is a less appealing target. • Confront a pursuer. If you know that someone is following you, turn and ask them the time. Get a good look at their face and overall appearance. Attackers prefer to target victims who haven't seen their face • Struggle and yell if attacked • Rape is often committed, not by strangers, but by people who know the victim beforehand.
