#1 • You walk 3 km west and then 4 km headed 60 degrees north of east. Find the resultant displacement.
#2 • The position of a thrown baseball is given by r = 1.5 m i + (12 m/s i + 16 m/s j)t – 4.9m/s2j t2 • Find its velocity and acceleration.
#3 • Another joyful physics student throws is cap into the air with an initial velocity of 24.5 m/s at 36.9 degrees from the horizontal. • Find the total time the cap is in the air. • The total horizontal distance traveled.
#4 • A policeman chases a master jewel thief across city rooftops. They are both running at 5 m/s when they come to a gap between buildings that is 4 m wide and has a drop of 3 m. The thief leaps at 5m/s and at an angle of 45 degrees and clears the gap easily. The policeman, who did not study physics like the thief did, thinks he should maximize his horizontal velocity, so he leaps at 5 m/s horizontally. • Does the policeman clear the gap? • By how much does the thief clear the gap?
#5 • A helicopter drops a supply package to soldiers in a jungle clearing. When the package is dropped, the helicopter is 100 m above the clearing and flying at 25 m/s at an angle of 36.9 degrees above the horizontal. • Where does the package land? • If the helicopter flies at constant velocity, where is it when the package lands?
#6 • A park ranger with a tranquilizer dart gun intends to shoot a monkey hanging from a branch. The ranger aims directly at the monkey. The monkey, seeing the dart gun discharge, lets go of the branch and drops out of the tree, expecting to avoid the dart. Show that the monkey will be hit regardless of the initial speed of the dart so long as it is great enough for the dart to travel the horizontal distance to the tree before hitting the ground. Assume the reaction time of the monkey is negligible.
#7 • Your slapshot in hockey is wickedly fast, but not very accurate. The puck, struck at ice level, misses the net and just clears the top of the Plexigas wall of height h = 2.80 m. The flight time at the moment the puck clears the wall is t1 = 0.650 s, and the horizontal distance is x1 = 12.0 m. • Find the initial speed and direction of the puck. • When does the puck reach its maximum height? • What is the maximum height of the puck?
