  3. About the Town • Located in the state of Baden-Württemberg • Only 20 km from the mainly industrial city, Mannheim • Language: German • Currency: Euro (€1 ~$1.48) • Population: 135,000 • 28,000 students from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität • 30,000 American citizens (mostly military)

  4. History • 600,000 years ago • A jawbone from the “Heidelberg Man,” or homo heidelbergensis , was discovered in Heidelberg in 1907. It is believed to be the earliest evidence of human life in Europe. • 5th century B.C. • Celtic fortress • 40-260 A.D. • Occupied by the Roman Empire until German tribes conquered the city • 863 A.D. • Monastery of St. Michael built inside the old Celtic fortress • 1196 • Estimated founding date of Heidelberg • 1386 • the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität is founded • 1400 • Medieval fort is upgraded to a castle

More History • 1693 • City nearly completely destroyed by French troops • 18th century • City rebuilt in the Baroque style • 1815 • The Holy Alliance was formed by Austria, Russia, and Prussia in Heidelberg. • 1933-1945 • Nazi Party stronghold • Heavily occupied by Nazi forces • Escaped Allied bombing raids because U.S. military planned on using the city as a base after the war • 1948 • American musician Jackson Browne was born
