  1. MRI: Acquisition of new single-crystal X-raydiffractionsystem for teaching/research laboratory Tatiana Timofeeva, New Mexico Highlands University, DMR 0420863 A highly stable porous lanthanide metal-organic framework, Y(BTC)(H2O)·4.3H2O (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), with pore size of 5.8 Å has been constructed and investigated for hydrogen storage. Gas sorption measurements show that this porous MOFcan take up hydrogen of about 2.1 wt % at 77 K and 10 bar. XC-ray crystal structure of material was studied at NMHU and neutonografic investigation was carried out at LANL. Neutron powder diffraction data revealed four distinct D2 sites that are progressively filled within the nanoporous framework. Junhua Luo et al., JACS, 2008, 9626. Porous structure of MOF with coordinated water molecules (green) inside, and (b) hydrogen clusters formed inside MOF. The first in the US laser system for crystal growth on diffractometer was used to crystallize and study several liquids, such as metha- and ortho-nitro toluene, ethyl acetate, methyl benzoate , diethyl carbonate , and to study their molecular and crystal structure.

  2. MRI: Acquisition of new single-crystal X-raydiffractionsystem for teaching/research laboratory Tatiana Timofeeva, New Mexico Highlands University, DMR 0420863 NMHU Center for Structural Studies NMHU Center for Structural Studies Paul Tongwa received an award to attend American Crystallo-graphic Association meeting at Knoxville, TN in May 2008. Paul at his poster with Dr. Yong (University of Minnesota) . was opened at Las Vegas, NM at New Mexico Highlands University on March 20, 2008. Collaborators from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Georgia Institute of Technology and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology presented their papers. NMHU students presented thirteen posters. In spring 2008 four NMHU students graduated at Chemistry Department. All of them used crystallography as a main tool to study synthesized mate-rials .
