  2. 2.10 Leit af frelsi í Ameríku bls.111-119 Árin 1873-1914 settust um 15.000 Íslendingar varanlega að í Ameríku, einkum Kanada. Meðal orsaka voru Öskjugos 1875 og mikil harðindi 1880-1890 Leit að frelsi, tækifærum og ævintýrum hvatti marga til að flytjast búferlum til Vesturheims Ameríkuagentar ráku grimman áróður fyrir vesturferðum

  3. Flestir fóru úr N-Múla og Þingeyjarsýslum • Fátæklingar voru stundum sendir vestur • Fyrstu landnemarnir áttu erfitt uppdráttar, en þeir hjálpuðu löndum sínum er síðar komu.

  4. Vestur-Íslendingar lögðu mikla rækt við menningu sína og uppruna, t.d. tungu. • Þeir mynduðu t.d.íslenska kirkjusöfnuði með íslenskum prestum og gáfu út blöð, tímarit og bækur á íslensku • Vestur-Íslendingar studdu stofnun Eimskipafélgas Íslands • Margir settust að í Nýja-Íslandi við Winnipegvatn, urðu bændur eða unnu við lagningu járnbrauta og iðnað
