Determine your viewing needs
  • Where are you going to put the videos and how do you want people to see them?
  • Typical platforms:
    • Stand-alone (Media Player, iTunes)
    • PowerPoint
    • Web pages
    • YouTube

  • .VOB = Video Object; contains several streams multiplexed together (video, audio, and subtitles)
  • .IFO = DVD info file; an index into a video file
  • These files cannot be edited directed; they need to be converted to another file type

  • .mov = Apple Quicktime
  • .m4v, .mv4, .mp4 = mpeg 4 video; Apple ipod
  • .mpg or .mpeg = mpeg 2 video; PC based
  • .wmv = Windows Media Video
  • .avi = audio video interleave; files are very large
  • .flv = flash video files; good for web pages
  • .swf = multimedia; good for web pages

  • Codec = coder/decoder; program to transform digital data
  • H.264 is a popular codec

  • The .vob and .ifo files first need to be converted into a format that can be edited
  • Many different converters are available on the internet
  • Most are between $20 and $50
  • Beware of free ones!
  • Conduct some product reviews before deciding to buy

  • Windows Movie Maker is free, easy to use, and reliable
  • Quicktime Pro or iMovie are good for Macs
