  1. The SPEED Strategy S In chapter 3, George tells Slim more about his relationship with Lennie, and the power he felt he had over him in the past. This shows how his feelings about this power have changed When he says “I’ve beat the hell outa him, and he coulda bust every bone in my body jus’ with his han’s, but he never lifted a finger against me.” This suggests that he feels guilty that he ‘beat the hell’ out of Lennie, because although it made him feel powerful at the time, he came to realise that Lennie showed more power when he ‘never lifted a finger’ to hurt him Moreover, the mention of “bustin’ every bone” foreshadows Lennie’s crushing of Curleys’ hand “jus with his han’s”, and so suggests how much power George has over Lennie . This power can clearly be used in a good way or in a bad way, something we see later on in the chapter P E E D
