The Nervous System. By: Christina Sulfaro and Audrey Scanlon. The Brain. 3 parts of the brain; cerebrum, brain stem, and the cerebellum Cerebrum- controls movement, the senses, speech, and abstract thought. Brain stem- controls uncontrolled actions, like breathing, and heart rate.

The Brain • 3 parts of the brain; cerebrum, brain stem, and the cerebellum • Cerebrum- controls movement, the senses, speech, and abstract thought. • Brain stem- controls uncontrolled actions, like breathing, and heart rate. • Cerebellum- coordinates the movement of muscles and helps maintain balance.
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know….. That the average brain weighs about 3 pounds???!!!!
The spinal cord • 31 pairs of spinal nerves on the spinal cord • All nerves are different • Provide a two-way communication system among the spinal cord and parts of the arms, legs, neck, and some other parts • Vertebras protect the spinal cord
Fun Fact!!!!! Did you know…… When you sneeze, all of your organs shut down, even your brain??!!!!
The senses • Five senses • Sight, hear, smell, touch, taste • Eyes- used to see • Ears- used to hear • Nose- used to smell • Hands- used to touch • Mouth, tongue, taste buds- used to taste
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know….. That the most sensitive finger was your index finger???!!!
Eye • Two organs used for sight • Located on the upper skull in the front • some parts of the eye are retina, cornea, Iris, pupil, lens, your optic nerve, and of course the blood vessels • The cornea is the mains lens of the eye and performs most of the focusing.
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know……. That you see upside down until your Brain flips the picture???!!!!
Ear • Organ for hearing and balance • 3 parts are outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear • Outer ear and middle ear are used to pass on sound • The inner ear evaluates sound waves and contains an apparatus which keeps the body stable and balanced.
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know….. That even though the stegosaurus weighed 1 and a half tons, that its brain was only the size of a walnut?????!!!!!
Tongue and taste buds • Very strong muscle • Covered by the lingual membrane, which identifies the flavor of food • Taste buds are located on the surface of your tongue. • arrangement of sounds and speech direct its progress to help in swallowing.
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know…. There is an average of 9,000 taste buds on your tongue, in your throat, and on the roof of your mouth???!!!!
Smell • Considered to be least important of the five senses • the oldest sense of all • Sense organs are made up of two yellowish-gray pieces of tissue, called olfactory membranes. • Located in a pair of clefts under the bridge of the nose. • When a person sniffs the air to sense a smell the air moves through your nose to your olfactory membranes
Fun Fact!!!!!! Did you know…… that babies have more taste buds than an adult. They even have them on the inside of their cheeks???!!!!
Touch • Shows us the shape, size, and texture of everything. • Nerve endings in the skin send signs to our brain, the brain then evaluates the signs and records the outcome of touch
