Most college students attend public institutions nationally Many shapes and sizes – more diverse schools/students Owned and operated by the state – buildings, etc. MONEY: financial support from the state Must abide by state regulations and rules Often larger, at least at flagships Lower tuition for residents Less diverse geographically Few need-blind that meet full-need Research Graduation rates State University systems/flagships
Political Pressures • Legislative bills • Governing bodies and boards • Voter propositions • Shift away from higher education funding • Public Issues squeezing higher education dollars as baby boomers age • Healthcare, social security, retirement • Higher taxes (tuition increase limits) • Politically damaging • Shift burden to families
