Understanding Online Academic Integrity: A Guide for Young Students

This resource emphasizes the importance of online academic integrity for young learners. It highlights how students may not realize that copying from the internet constitutes cheating, mistakenly believing that cheating only involves direct copying from peers. To deepen their understanding, the resource suggests engaging students in scenarios of academic dishonesty, encouraging them to devise alternative solutions. Furthermore, it underscores the significance of a classroom code of conduct on academic integrity, facilitating development and commitment among students.

  1. Online Academic Integrity – Why Bother? By Rachel Kuhn and Kevin Schwartz

  2. Elementary Level • Why Bother? • Young students may not understand that copying things from the Internet is actually considered cheating. They might be under the impression that cheating only involves copying off another person in their class or a friend from another class. • What Can I Do? • Give students 2-4 scenarios of online academic dishonesty. Have students pretend to be the offending student(s) and ask them to create 3 ways to resolve the situation that would NOT involve academic dishonesty. • Talk about the importance of a code of conduct for online academic integrity. Together as a class, develop a code of conduct and have students sign.
