RANK vs. HONOR GRADUATE • Official Ranking • First official rank delivered on September 21. • Covers grade point average of all classes required for graduation through end of summer school, 2012. • Last and final official rank delivered in January after calculation of fall semester grades in classes required for graduation. • Honor Graduates • Determined by averaging grades from ALL classes taken through fall semester of senior year. • Delivered with final official rank in January. • Summa cum laude: 100 or > GPA • Magna cum laude: 95-99 GPA • Cum laude: 90-94 GPA

Exceptions EIC Board Policy:All courses required for graduation under the recommended program shall be included except those courses taken outside the school day, including but not limited to classes taken during night school, pass/fail classes, correspondence courses, credit by exam grades, summer foreign study programs, or grades exempted by an ARD committee, credits earned in middle school, or classes taken more than once.

Step 1: The Application • Texas Common Application--www.applytexas.org • Letters of Recommendation (resume, addressed stamped envelope, thank you) • Resume – List Everything! • Essays • Make It Your Best (choose major personal character trait and choose event that exemplifies the trait) • Proofread! • Get it Critiqued (essayedge.com) • Make Yourself Shine! • On-line is Preferred • Importance of College/University Websites & Contacts

  16. Texas Application FAQ 1. How are college hours determined? • AP scores are converted by each college/university. Those scores will not be counted in the application process. Your child will need to contact the college/university to find out how many hours will be awarded. • Dual Credit courses are 3 hours per semester unless it is a science course which is 4 hours per semester. Only hours that have been completed can be counted.

Step 2: Send Transcripts • Order official transcripts from Ms. Driver in the Counseling Office • 1st transcript is FREE • Transcripts for any scholarship applications are free • All other transcripts will cost $5.00 • Allow 5 days for processing—plan ahead! • We do not Fed Ex or UPS transcripts • Student or parent cannot hand carry an official transcript

Step 3: Send test scores • Student must send SAT/ACT scores directly to universities • Students can take them multiple times • SAT/ACT scores are no longer on transcripts • SAT next test date: October 6 Late Registration deadline Sept. 21 (www.collegeboard.org) • ACT next test date: October 27 Registration deadline September 21 (www.actstudent.org) • Send to prospective universities when taking college entrance exams

  19. SAT vs. ACT SAT ACT Measures skills closely related to the content of courses in 4 areas: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. Scores range from 0 to 36, with 23.4 being the Johnson HS average. • Measures ability to do college-level work in critical reading/math/writing areas. • Each section uses scale from 200-800. • Perfect score: 2400

  20. New to SAT and ACT • You will be prompted to provide an acceptable photo during registration. The photo will appear on your admission ticket. (This photo on the admission ticket will be required beginning with the March tests.) • You must present your admission ticket with your acceptable photo ID to enter your test center. No ticket, no ID, no admission! • Standby test takers will not be admitted unless preregistered on line. • Changes to test center, date or test type will not be permitted on test day. • Be sure to read what acceptable photo ID means

(before break!) • Recommended Time Frame: Have application/transcript/scores mailed a month before deadline • HONORS PROGRAMS: Often have earlier deadlines. Check dates. • SCHOLARSHIPS: Often have earlier deadlines. Check dates.
