  11. Trimester System • Increased number of credit opportunities • Flexibility in scheduling • A 6th period for various uses • Small group Instruction • Remediation • Test or lab make-up time • ECA & GQE Exam preparation time

  12. ***Scheduling*** Meeting the Needs of our Students

  13. Scheduling Options For Freshmen • Geometry • Algebra XY • Full Year Algebra • Full Year Algebra Co-Taught • Full Year Algebra Resource

  14. Are we preparing our students to succeed? Course Content

  15. Course Curriculum Reevaluated • 8th grades standards ~What should they already know? • State Standards • ECA Content • Vocabulary

  16. Structured Vocabulary Review state list of important words for algebra I Decide as a department on words requiring a higher level of importance Create chart to organize words, textbook sections, definitions, and pictures/examples Integrate time to complete chart and discuss terms into daily lessons

  17. Department Planning • Standards are divided into 4-week increments and a test is given every 4 weeks • Each test covers several standards

  18. Student Success Process • The lowest standard in re-taught for one week during mini lessons • Students are quizzed at the end of the week on only the standard that has been re-taught

  19. Mastery learning • Students much achieve 80% mastery on a standard in order to master it • Students are grouped by mastery or non-mastery on each standard

  20. Student Success Process • Students who still have not achieved mastery during mini lessons are required to stay for 6th period during the next week • During 6th period, we can do one-on-one work and try different methods of teaching to help the students learn the material

  21. No permission to forget • Students are not allowed to forget old standards because the tests are cumulative • The same standard can be addressed in more than one SSP cycle

  22. SSP is a school-wide effort • Our administration supports us in saying that SSP 6th period trumps all other 6th period assignments • Our faculty is united in this idea, which stresses to our students the importance of Algebra

  23. SSP helps our students • Students are motivated to do well on SSP quizzes so that they won’t be required to attend 6th period • Students can see their own progress by graphing their percentage on each standard

  24. How SSP relates to ECA • Emphasis is placed on core standards • SSP assessments use the same vocabulary as the ECA • It helps us identify the areas that our students need to work on, and we can fill in those gaps

  25. ECA Wednesdays & The 20-Day Plan 6th Period = ECA Preparation

  26. ECA Wednesdays • All teachers assigned to a group of students • Met every Wednesday to work on skill remediation and reinforcement • Materials provided to the teachers • Student volunteers

  27. 20-Day Plan • 5 weeks prior to the test we increased the meeting time to 4 days a week. • Application of skills • Practice tests • Gridded Response

  28. Benefits • Parent Communication • School wide effort • 775 minutes (approximately 13 hours)‏ • Carried over to English ECA preparation.

  29. Students who pass go on to Geometry Students who fail are placed in 1 trimester of mathlab for remediation, then move on the Geometry for 2nd and 3rd trimesters What do we do with our scores?

  30. Math Lab Remediation • Placed students in class as a result of failing score on algebra I ECA • Created course calendar to provide daily guide for curriculum • Created possible curriculum related to calendar with each unit approximately one week in length • Created waiver packet tests over 10 of the most relevant ECA topics (ex. Systems of equations and solving quadratics)

  31. Math Lab (Continued) • Required minimum score of 80% to pass waiver packets • Allowed students to revise waiver packets during bonus period to improve score • Stored waiver packets in individual binders for each student • Recorded waiver packet passing results in spreadsheet for each class

  32. Benefits of Mathlab • Students earn 1 credit • Students get intensive ECA remediation • Trimester schedule allows scheduling flexibility so that students stay on track
