Unlocking Reading Velocity: Match Your Speed to the Task

Discover the essential link between reading speed and task type through an engaging automotive metaphor. Just as you wouldn't choose a Lamborghini for a leisurely cruise in a golf cart, understanding when to adjust your reading velocity is crucial. This lesson explores five different reading rates: scanning, skimming, rapid reading, careful reading, and slow reading. You'll become adept at recognizing when to read fast or slow, enhancing your reading efficiency and effectiveness. Get ready to dive into the world of reading dynamics!

  1. Reading Velocity 6 It’s all about the speed, baby

  2. Let’s talk cars. • If you could have any make/model of car out there, which would you choose? Why that one? • For a lot of people, their dream car has to do with speed. They want something fast and flashy. (Nothing wrong with that, BTW) • On the next slide, you’ll be asked to match popular cars with their top speed. Ready?

  3. The Cars 1. Shelby Mustang 2. Golf Cart 3. Smart Car 4. Lamborghini Aventador 5. Corvette 911 Turbo Top Speeds A. 205 mph B. 155 mph C. 20 mph D. 91 mph E. 220 mph

  4. The Cars & Their Top Speeds 1. Shelby Mustang—155 mph 2. Golf Cart—20 mph 3. Smart Car—91 mph 4. Lamborghini Aventador—220 mph 5. Corvette 911 Turbo—205 mph

  5. So what does this have to do with reading? • Quite a lot, actually. • You wouldn’t use the Lamborghini when you need the golf cart. • “You gotta read faster!” “You gotta slow down!” • Which is it? • It’s both.  • You need to match your reading rate to the task at hand, just like matching the cars to the speeds. • Huh? • Each of the five Reading Velocity lessons will look at one of the Five Reading Rates.

  6. The 5 Reading Rates (from fastest to slowest) Scanning Skimming Rapid Reading Careful Reading Slow Reading

  7. Before next time • Notice your reading speed as you do different types of reading. • Homework • Ace Reader • Internet • Functional (cereal boxes, signs, instructions, etc.) • Do you deliberate choose to read faster or slower? • Next time . . . All about Scanning, the Lamborghini of reading rates!
