  1. Week 10November 10-14 I can use appropriate fix-up strategies when comprehension/meaning breaks down in my reading. I can use questioning to narrow my focus and develop ideas in my writing. I can identify, explain & show examples that the United States of America was founded on a set of ideals & principles.

Monday, November 10th • Current Event due Wednesday • Composition Book: Explain how you would react if Chase Middle School decided to enforce a dress code. • Access Schema about what Americans Believe • Introduce QTR 2 Rubrics • List of Democratic Ideals/Values • Organizational features • Democratic Ideals/Values Notes – What do these ideals actually mean? • Read Declaration of Independence for evidence of ideals/values • Page 177 AN • Choose an organizer to hold thinking • Keep track of when something doesn’t make sense with a “?” & note what you do when something doesn’t make sense

  4. How does one organize an argument? • How is the D of I Organized? • What basic ideals about government were in the Declaration of Independence? WTP lesson 7, p29 • Ideals – How colonists thought they aught to be governed • Arguments – why colonists thought they were justified in braking away from Britain • Complaints – list of colonist complaints against the king • Conclusions – “That these united Colonies, and of Right ought to be, Free & Independent States”

  5. Arguments of the Declaration • Rights of the people are based on natural law. Natural law is a higher law. Neither constitutions nor governments may violate the natural law. The only rightful purpose of government is to protect the people’s natural rights. • If a government violates a natural law, the people have the right to change or abolish the government & form a new one.

  6. Arguments of the Declaration (cont.) • An agreement existed between the colonists and the king. The colonists consented to be governed by the king so long as he protected their rights to life, liberty & property. • No agreement had been made between parliament & the colonists, so parliament had no right to govern or tax the colonists, especially because colonists were not represented in parliament. • The King violated his agreement with colonists by acting with parliament to deprive them of their rights. Since the agreement had been violated, colonists had the right to establish their own form of government.
