Shape, Form, Type • The basswood can grow to be 27 meters tall. • It can grow to have a diameter of 75cm. • Branches arch downward but curl up at the ends. • The top of the tree is rounded. Figure #1 Text [3], Fig [1]
Bark • The bark of the basswood is soft and light colored. • It has narrow, flat ridges often with horizontal cracks. • The bark can grow up to 2.54cm thick at the base of the trunk. • Young trees have smooth, slender bark. Figure #2 Text [1], Fig [1]
Twig • Twigs are: • stout • purplish, greenish, or yellowish brown • random in shape (curved, zigzagged) Figure #3 Figure #4 Text , Fig 3 [3], Fig 4 [4]
Leaf • The leaves are: • Deciduous • Alternating • 12-15cm long • Hairy underneath • Roughly toothed • tapered Figure #5 Text [3], Fig [1]
Buds • Buds have a reddish tint and are nearly round. • Their outer shell is composed of three overlapping scales. Figure #6 Text [3], Fig [4]
Flower • The basswood flower is sweet-smelling and has a yellow/white color. • Flowering occurs in June for most basswoods. • A large variety of bug pollinate the flowers. Text [1], Fig [5]
Fruit • Normally, the fruit have one seed, but some have two or three although the latter is rare. • The hard, nut-like fruit come in a variety of shapes including: egg-shaped, round, onion-shaped, conical, and pentagonal. Figure #8 Text [1&3], Fig [1]
Habitat and Range • The basswoods live in climates including continental-cold winters, warm summers, and high humidity. • The trees flourish in regions with an average temperature of 18° to 27 °C in July and rainfall of 250-380mm during the growing season.
