  1. GEM Liaison Report Dave Webb/Chris Russell SHINE, July 14, 2005 GEM is NSF-based grass roots organization like SHINE - Data analysis and modeling of magnetosphere and its interactions with ionosphere and atmosphere - Campaigns - Annual workshop - Funding competition - Student participation GEM Steering Committee Chair: Bob Strangeway (July 1, 2003 - June 30, 2006) Regular Members Jordanova, Vania (2004-2007) Ridley, Aaron (2002-2005) Lu, Gang (2002-2005) Sanchez, Ennio (2001-2004) Weimer, Dan (2004-2007) Russell, Chris (Communications Coordinator) Toffoletto, Frank (W/S Coord) (2000-2004) Student Rep (2005): Zhang, Jichun

  2. Website: gem.rice.edu/~gem SHINE Interactions with GEM: - Workshops: GEM is interested in meeting with SHINE. It will be in Snowmass next year at end of June. BUT would consider joining SHINE anywhere in future years. 2007 - possible joint annual workshop? - Separate smaller joint workshops? Possible Topics: Reconnection, Numerical simulation techniques, Campaign events, Solar wind-magnetosphere interactions - Possible Coordination of International Heliophysical Year (IHY) activities? E.g., Coordinated Wiki for campaigns At GEM-CEDAR meeting the IHY discussions went well. Bob Strangeway has softened his stand on GEM involvement in IHY but he is concerned that equivalent IGY money is not being provided for IHY. The UN small instrumentation initiative is a plus.

  3. Campaigns - GEM has a new campaign on Global Interactions and would be interested in the joint study of storm intervals. GEM is interested in the effects on the magnetosphere but appreciates that the properties of ICMEs that are of interest to SHINE certainly affect that interaction. Mutual benefit from such exchanges. - Inner Magnetosphere/Storms Campaigns will have reduced effort next year and then cease. The other present campaign is Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling. There are several storm studies going on. Some storms, such as May 1997, have been same periods as SHINE Campaigns.
