WHERE STUDENTS COME FIRST MAY 2014 Hello Spring! With just a few more weeks of school remaining, there are still many things on the calendar including our Book Fair April 28-May 3. This is a very exciting time to start your child reading regularly and to get books that you know they will enjoy over the summer. To celebrate reading, here are a few tips on reading that will hopefully be beneficial to you and your children. Tip #1: Read, Read, Read! Reading takes skill and practice. One of the best and simplest steps to improve the reading ability for children is to provide sustained periods of time for children to read. Tip #2: Help your child to read like a writer. Even in the early grades, children can begin to "get into the head" of the author. Reading improves a child's writing, and writing improves a child's reading. Tip #3: Read a variety of books and magazines. Short stories, poems, dialogues, magazine articles, charts and tables. Children need to be able to read a wide variety of texts ranging from road signs to restaurant menus, comic books to classics, and from tennis shoe ads to computer manuals. Tip #4: Build your child's reading stamina. To build reading stamina, you may wish to encourage your child to increase gradually the amount of time she reads at one sitting. Include short breaks, such as stretching or closing her eyes for a minute. Set individual reading goals based upon doing the "best that she can." Tip #5: Teach your child that visuals are part of the tex.t Students are often required to gather information from photos, captions, drawings, charts, and graphs. You can help by teaching your child to look at all of these materials as part of the total text. This is still going to be located on the Cinnabar School campus with hours of 6:30am-6pm and all hours can be charged on a credit card with RinaFabros in the Finance department. This past few weeks, the 7th grade students have been studying Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. However, they aren't just learning about them through a textbook, they are the classroom pets! After becoming comfortable holding these fascinating creatures, students have experimented with them to learn more about them. After understanding their senses and their body structures, students designed and conducted experiments to test their preferences. For example some students tested what they like to eat and some tested whether they prefer a damp or dry environment. Ms. Jane’s favorite quote from all of these explorations is "these are actually really beautiful." I bet you can't wait until 7th grade when you and your student gets to study Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches! We are very pleased to have recently received new students to our Cinnabar family. Please make an effort to introduce yourself if you have not already to our new Middle School students, Caitlin Schneider & Faith Wabl, who came from Petaluma Junior High and are a wonderful addition to our Middle School. As well, we have also been very fortunate to have the additions of Michelle Novotny and Dominic and Natalia de la Prade to our 5th grade with Mr. Kishineff. Finally, Jared Rafael who began first grade with Ms. Minehan-Willis. We hope you all are a success and that you feel very comfortable here at Cinnabar!

Estas últimas semanas, los estudiantes de séptimo grado han estado estudiando silbido Madagascar cucarachas. Sin embargo, no están aprendiendo acerca de ellos a través de un libro de texto, que son las mascotas de la clase! Después de sentirse cómodas siendo sostenidas por los alumnos, estas fascinantes criaturas; los estudiantes han experimentado con ellos para aprender más sobre ellos. Después de comprender sus sentidos y sus estructuras corporales, los estudiantes diseñaron y llevaron a cabo experimentos para poner a prueba sus preferencias. Por ejemplo, algunos estudiantes probaron lo que les gusta comer y otros probaron si prefieren un ambiente húmedo o seco. La profesora Janes nos menciona cual fue lo favorito de todas estas exploraciones "estos son realmente muy bonitas." Apuesto a que no puedes esperar hasta llegar al séptimo grado, y tener usted y su estudiante la oportunidad de estudiar Madagascar Hissing Cucarachas Estamos muy contentos de haber recibido recientemente nuevos estudiantes en nuestra familia Cinnabar. Por favor, haga un esfuerzo para presentarse a sí mismo si no lo ha hecho a nuestros nuevos estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria, Caitlin Schneider & FaithWabl, que vinieron de Petaluma Junior High y son una maravillosa adición a nuestra escuela secundaria. Además, también hemos sido muy afortunados de contar con las adiciones de Dominic y Natalia de la Prade en nuestro 5 º grado con el señor Kishineff. Por último, tenemos el placer de tener a Jared Rafael quien comenzó el primer grado con la Sra. Minehan-Willis. Esperamos que todo sea un éxito y que se sientan muy a gusto aquí en Cinnabar!
