  2. Taking the Pulse of the Planet • NOAA works around the clock and around the world to • Monitor the earth’s ocean and atmosphere • Understand and predict the earth’s environment • Communicate that information in meaningful ways • 2

  3. 2013 Billion Dollar Weather/Climate Disasters • In 2011 14 disasters causing more than $1 billion in the U.S. in 2011 (previous record was 9) • 670 lives lost, >6,000 injuries • $55 billion in economic losses

  4. Air Quality Forecasts • NOAA and EPA provide air quality forecasts • Air pollution illness costs $150B/year • Forecasts allow for people to prevent or limit harmful effects

  5. Climate Change Impacts on Human Health • Climate change threatens human health in many ways: • impacts from increased extreme weather events, • wildfire, • decreased air quality, • diseases transmitted by insects, food and water, and • threats to mental health

Educational Partnership Program • Over 1,400 degrees conferred: 163 PhD; 372 Masters; 923 Baccalaureate since 2001 • Over 1,100 students in the pipeline • Over 80% of students are from underrepresented groups • 81 graduates work for NOAA • 85 new faculty and 9 new degree programs at Cooperative Science Centers Institutions • Grant support for four Cooperative Science Centers , including 23 institutions in 10 states, Puerto Rico and DC • $14.4M in 2014

Bay Watershed Education and Training • Environmental education grants serving seven regions: California, Chesapeake Bay, Gulf of Mexico, Hawai'i, New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Lakes. • $7.2M in 2014 • With FY13 funding B-WET reached an estimated 76,000 students and 1,900 teachers 8

Environmental Literacy Grants • 2013 awards reached approximately 106,375 lifelong learners; 6,900 educators; and 1,725 K-12 students • Competitive K-12 and informal education grants • Regional to national scale awards leveraging high quality partners and incorporating NOAA’s scientific assets to promote stewardship and increase informed decision-making • $3.6M in 2014

Collaboration with the Math Science Partnership Program Texas Education Service Center Region 5 offers field trips to NOAA Turtle Barns as a professional development activity Pennsylvania’s Saint Francis University improves teacher content knowledge and instruction in science using NOAA supported Headwaters to Estuaries project Maryland Public Schools use NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay Buoy data as part of teacher professional development
