  2. Establishment of Concentration Camps • When? When the Nazis came into power in Germany in the early 1930s. • Why? In an effort to group people who were in some way “undesirable” in one place where they could be watched

  3. The First Camp Established DACHAU • Opened on March 22, 1933 • Located about 10 miles northwest of Munich, in southern Germany • Accommodated up to 5,000 prisoners at a time • Served as a “prototype” for other camps that would follow
