  1. RIVER RANGERS OUR TRIP TO THE LITTLE SACKVILLE RIVER Next

  2. ELECTROSEIGNING FOR FISH • Ernie and Angela looking for fish. • The electric current momentarily shocks the fish and Angela can scoop them up with her net. • Unfortunately, we didn’t find any fish this day. Next

  3. MEASURING WATER VELOCITY • Flowing water adds oxygen to the water for the fish to breathe. • We found that the floating ball travelled between the stakes in seconds. Next

  4. LOOKING FOR BUGS • We scooped bugs out of the water with strainers and put them in plastic containers. • We were amazed at how many bugs we found. Next

  5. EXAMINING THE BUGS • We examined all the bugs and noticed the differences. • We used a bug wheel (and Ernie’s help) to identify them. • One of our favourite was the caddisfly nymph. Next

  6. EXAMINING THE FISH • We got to have a close up look at the eel in the fish bowl. • In the tank, we looked at and learned about white suckers, nine-spine sticklebacks, common shiners and creek chub. Next

  7. OBSERVATIONAL NOTES • We chose one fish in the tank to observe closely. • We made a sketch of our fish and made notes on it. • Don’t we look as if we are having fun! Next

  8. CHECKING THE ACID LEVEL • We tested various acids (lemon, vinegar) with litmus paper. • We dipped litmus paper in the river. • We checked the colour of the litmus paper with the chart. • The acidity of the river was 7. That’s good! Next

  9. WATER TEMPERATURE • Cool water has more oxygen for the fish than warm water. • We took the temperature of the river water in the sun and in the shade. • We found that the water was 10° in the sun and 9° or 10°
