  2. Curriculum • In the Middle School, we are using Expeditionary Learning. • This curriculum builds upon 21st century skills, Common Core Standards, NYS Standards, and aids in college and career readiness.

  3. 6th Grade Curriculum • Module 1: “The Lightning Thief” • Supplemental Text: Nonfiction - “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell • Module 2: “Bud, Not Buddy” • Supplemental Text: Nonfiction- Steve Jobs’ Commencement Address at Stanford University • Module 3: “Dragonwings” • Supplemental Text: Nonfiction – “Understanding the Calamity” • Module 4: “Frightful’s Mountain” • Supplemental Text: Nonfiction – “DDT”

  4. 7th Grade Curriculum • Module 1: “A Long Walk to Water” • Supplemental Text(s): Nonfiction – Voices of Southern Sudan • Module 2: “Lyddie” • Supplemental Text(s): Nonfiction - Working Conditions in Industrialized America • Module 3: “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” • Supplemental Text(s): Nonfiction - Slavery in America • Module 4: “How Does the Teenage Brain Work?” • Supplemental Text(s): Nonfiction – Sustainability of Water

  5. Class Materials • Binder (with sections and paper) • Notes/Classwork • Homework • Graded Work • Writer’s notebook • Vocabulary journal • Independent reading book • Class book (what ever we are reading at the time) • Binder pouch with pens, mini stapler, pencils, hi-liters etc.

  6. Grading Policy • Assessments/Assignments = 50% • Projects/Portfolios = 20% • Homework = 15% • Classwork/Participation = 15%

  7. Class Participation • Everyday, students begin with 15 points. • If they forget their class materials, they lose 5 points. • For behavior, they receive 3 warnings prior to losing 5 points.

  8. Homework Policy • Homework is given every night and is expected to be completed. • Homework correlates to students academic growth and success. • If a student does not do their homework, they have 2 nights to make it up for full credit. After that, homework will not be accepted. • Homework is a percentage of students’ grades *

  9. Lateness Policy • For major assignments, the first day late is -10 points. Every day after that is 5.

  10. Attendance • Attendance is extremely important. If students miss a lot of school, they will fall behind with their work and are missing out on instruction from the teacher and their peers. • If students are absent, they are still expected to complete the work. They also should come to the teacher and ask what they should make up.

  11. Independent Reading • Why are independent reading books so important? • It is free choice and meant to be fun. • Helps fluency, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and so on. • Independent reading motivates students to read. • Throughout the year, students will have 7 book reports. Due dates were given the first week of school. The first book report is October 8th.

  13. How Can I Help My Child??? • www.engageny.org • This website provides helpful test questions and information regarding Common Core and the state tests. • Please make sure your child is doing their homework every night. • Please make sure your child is reading every night. • Communication is key!
