  2. MUGWUMPS!“Reform minded” Republicans that did not like the corruption in their own party. • Election of 1884: James G. Blaine (R) vs. Grover Cleveland (D) • Mugwumps voted for Democrat Cleveland! • Advocates for small, efficient government • Pushed for a reform known as the secret ballot (to prevent election fraud)

  3. Woman’s Christian Temperance Union • Founded by a group of women in 1874 • Saw alcohol as the root of all problems in society, tried to convince men to “give up the drink.” • By 1889, had 39 divisions devoted to various causes– workplace safety, world peace, public health.

  4. Susan B. Anthony • Arrested in 1872 for voting! • Tried to get Congress to pass constitutional amendment granting women suffrage.
