The Leader’s Three-fold Path Purgative 1st Dark Night Illuminative 2nd Dark Night Unitive Awakening to awareness of spiritual reality Familiar approaches to prayer stop working Fully letting go – surrendering the illusion of absolute autonomy Abundant gifts from God begin to dry up Good works and flowering of the virtues Confusion – missing the closeness to God God seems to have disappeared Discovering that God gives good gifts Great energy to do God’s work Soul experiences union with God Realizing that following a spiritual path brings added dimension to life Questioning: What am I doing wrong? Even through alternative methods of prayer, God does not return Listening prayer Easier to persevere Ego and life become relativized to a higher good Discovering addictions and attachments Discovering that the spiritual journey Is about one’s own transformation Learning to desire God For God’s self Redoubling efforts, only to experience more dryness and frustration

Unitive Fully letting go – Surrendering the illusion of absolute autonomy Great energy to do God’s work Continual process of learning to let go Listening prayer Easier to persevere Soul experiences union with God Discovering that the spiritual journey is about one’s own transformation Ego and life become relativized to a higher good

The Organization’s Three-fold Path Purgative 1st Dark Night Illuminative 2nd Dark Night Unitive Chose to follow a spiritual path during formative years Transition: Can we grow and stay true to our values? Sought spiritual direction Internal politics intensified Clarification of values created new energy and commitment Perceived, understood, and articulated the soul of the organization Creativity stagnated Bob felt dissatisfied Adhered to spiritual principles through thick and thin Vision renewed Business back on values- based course to success Leadership weary Egos and company itself became relativized to a higher good Questioned whether principles would hinder success High morale, high productivity Began to move entire organization into Illuminative Way Hit a wall: no way forward Financial success Naysayers’ voices get stronger Values tested through challenges

Purgative Chose to follow a spiritual path during formative years First Dark Night Adhered to spiritual principles through thick and thin High morale, high productivity Second Dark Night 2. Illuminative Financial success Sought spiritual direction Perceived, understood, and articulated the soul of the organization 3. Unitive Clarification of values created new energy and commitment Continual process of learning to let go Business back on values- based course to success Vision renewed Began to move entire organization into Illuminative Way Egos and company Itself became relativized to a higher good Values tested through challenges

  22. Enliven the soul in your organization You are empowered All members of an organization have a sphere of influence. Listen for soul Pride in workmanship and joy in work are manifestations of soulful care– and provide an opening to celebrate the human spirit. Don’t go it alone Soulful care transcends cultures and traditions – reach across differences while holding on to what makes you strong. Patience in Peril Difficult times are the very times it is most important to be patient and faithful.
