Going into Grade 11? • You need to select: ENGLISH MATHEMATICS PLUS 6 other elective courses, based upon your area of interest and prerequisite requirements for postsecondary studies (i.e. trades, college, university) AND you must select two alternate courses • Have you researched what courses you need to take NOWin order to be prepared for post-secondary studies AFTER?

PART 1 The Credit Counselling Summary - CCS • Your homeroom teacher will give you your CCS – It is a record of courses you have taken/are taking now • Look at it carefully: Do you still require Community Involvement Hours? (Grad requirement) • Did you successfully complete the Grade 10 Literacy test? If not, did you take the OLC4O course? (Grad requirement) Please note that the OLC4O course is an English credit, but universities and colleges do not recognize it as part of their admissions process • Are there any compulsory courses I need to take? (i.e. Art, Groups 1, 2 or 3 – Grad requirements): see OSSD handout

  5. POST-SECONDARY PATHWAYS Work - If you plan to go to work, select enough courses to graduate Skilled Trades – may require certain college courses (e.g. math and sciences for plumbing, electrical) There are over 140 trades, ranging from 3-5 years in length for training

  6. POST-SECONDARY PATHWAYS CONT’D Colleges – offer certificates (1 yr.), diplomas (2-3 yrs.), applied degrees (4 yrs.) Except for applied degrees, college admissions are based on Grade 11 C, M, and/or U marks Need specific courses for certain college programs e.g., Social Worker at Seneca • Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a majority of senior credits at the College Preparation (C), University/College Preparation (M), or University Preparation (U) level • Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U) Universities – offer Bachelor’s degrees (3-4 yrs.) Admissions based on best 6 Grade 12 U and/or M courses, including ENG4U – check programs carefully for specific courses required e.g. Bachelor of Commerce (Business) Degree at the University of Toronto Grade Range -- Average: mid- to high 80s; MCV4U: mid- to high 80s; ENG4U: low to mid-80s + next best 4 Gr. 12 U and/or M subjects, Supplemental Application. An additional fee of $50 is required.

  7. PART 2The Research - Think With the End in Mind Where are you headed? What do you need in order to get there? • Pay attention to Gr. 11 prerequisites for Gr. 12 courses & college and university admission requirements • Applying to an Ontario university or to a college for an Applied Degree, please note that you must have at least 6 Grade 12 U and/or M coded courses • College research, check out www.ontariocolleges.ca, and for university research, check out www.electronicinfo.ca • Research carefully and select your courses appropriately Check the college and university view books, websites, go to college and university fairs, visit campuses, see a guidance counsellor to check the admission requirements

PART 3 Student Tasks – Select your courses Complete the COURSE SELECTION ONLINE and print a copy • Return your signed course selection sheet to your homeroom teacher by Wednesday, February 12th • Earlier returns are acceptable • If you want to transfer schools, complete course selection anyway, in case the transfer does not go through

  9. You are requesting courses for TWO semesters - Semester 1 and Semester 2 Special circumstances will be dealt with by the Administration (Vice-Principals) No courses are guaranteed but guidance staff will do their best to get you into the courses you choose Realities for Course Selections

  10. Please Note You have the option to take Co-operative Education courses • regular co-op • OYAP (apprenticeship) • dual credit • Specialist High Skills Major (Hospitality, Business, Construction, Environment)

  11. Please Note cont’d • New: GPP3O1 – Link Crew Leadership Students will develop personal responsibility, a sense of self-worth, compassion for others, and enthusiasm for assisting others. The program will combine leadership activities and mentoring experiences tailored towards assisting the Grade 9 students in their transition year. • Must complete an application and return to Mrs. Zicaroin room 123 by February 14th! • Late applications will not be accepted • CGD3M1 – Exploring Europe and Asia This course is offered as a Grade 10 course and has been designed for those students who enjoyed and were successful in the Grade 9 Geography course. Speak to Mr. Bush in room 304 if you have any questions.

  13. Have your parent/guardian sign your Course Request form and return to your homeroom teacher by February 12th!
