  1. Cycling of Matter in Ecosystems Eighth Grade

  2. Main Idea • Earth receives energy from the sun • The amount of matter on Earth doesn’t change • Matter is recycled from organism to environment and back again • There are 3 different cycles on Earth • Carbon • Nitrogen • Water

  3. Carbon is found everywhere Carbon dioxide Waste product of cellular respiration, breaking down of sugar to get energy opposite of photosynthesis Carbon stored in organisms cannot be used until the organisms are eaten or decomposed Carbon Cycle

  4. Carbon Cycle • Decomposition- bacteria and other decomposers break down dead organisms • Carbon dioxide is released into the air by decomposition • Carbon cycle is the process of carbon moving among the air, the ground, and plants and animals • Combustion or burning puts CO2 into the air • Cars, busses, coal-burning power plants, and oil furnaces all effect Earth’s carbon cycle

  5. Nitrogen Cycle-a way that nitrogen moves through the environment Bacteria make nitrogen available to roots and plants Animals get nitrogen by eating plants Nitrogen Cycle

  6. Nitrogen Cycle • Nitrogen is found in many places but mostly in the atmosphere in the form of nitrogen gas • All living things use nitrogen to make materials like protein but cannot use nitrogen gas • Nitrogen fixation is the process of converting nitrogen form the atmosphere into a form that is useful to a variety of organisms

  7. Water Cycle is a continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and atmosphere Sun is the source of energy that drives the water cycle Heat from the sun causes evaporation Process of liquid changing into gas This creates water vapor and goes into the atmosphere Water Cycle

  8. Water Cycle • Transpiration is when water vapor is released through opening in plant leaves • This water vapor joins the other vapor in the atmosphere • Animal also add water vapor to the atmosphere during breathing and perspiration • Condensation happens once the vapor rises and cools • Process of changing gas to a liquid • Precipitation is when water falls to Earth’s surface in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail • Groundwater is water located below the Earth’s surface
