Tapantí Trip The goals, the beauty, the techniques, the fails, and the SUCCESS! By: Sharaia Morehand
Goals • Get great “still motion” shots of hummingbirds. • Get pictures of their wings extended.
Action shots -I used ISO100 and the Sports setting. -I toggled the exposure here and there.
Techniques I did not like the results I was getting with the Sports setting, so I went back to “P” mode and waited for the birds to land on branches to take the pictures.
Perched Shots I still had a hard time focusing on the bird, and not the background.
And other times the focus was on the bird, but not quite the picture I was looking for. Perched shots • 1/80 • F6.9 • EXP. -0.7 • ISO 250
More Focus I decided to keep the camera focused on or near the branch so that the quick instance that a bird landed on it, I could refocus quickly and get my shot.
Finally, I got it! • 1/80 • F6.9 • EXP. -0.7 • ISO 200
1/320 F6.0 EXP. -1.0 ISO 100
1/200 F6.0 EXP.-1.0 ISO 100
More Practice • 1/200 • F6.0 • EXP. -1.0 • ISO 100 I continued my successful tactics of pre-focusing and waiting for my subject to fall into my frame. I caught an interesting show of aggression between a few hummingbirds. I was excited to capture this. Everyone who was around the hummingbirds witnessed the aggression between them all.
