  9. What Does Excellent Professor Teach? • Entrepreneurship/Leadership Training: • There are many company founders and CEOs as well as distinguished professors all over the world in our ISyE alumni. • Seminars given by entrepreneurs and industry leaders will be arranged. Mentor program will be explored.

  10. What Does Excellent Professor Teach? • Life Experience: • Many professors have been several study-abroad programs and gained extensive traveling experience throughout the world. They will bring the life experience in casual meetings with students to enrich students’ view of the world and their lives.

  11. Why ISyE is a Hot Major? • (BROAD)It covers many areas linked people’s daily-life needs, e.g., • Food/cloth/household products sourced from supply-chains • Airline, ground, sea transportation and logistics operations (e.g., UPS) • Management of manufacturing operations (e.g., facility design, inventory management, warehouse, plant operation quality and efficiency improvement, new product/process development, customer relationship management, finance engineering, product life cycle management, etc.)

  12. Why ISyE is a Hot Major? • (New Technology)It is heavily associated with Information Technology. • Data mining and knowledge discovery for supporting decisions in manufacturing, finance (bank/investment firms), supply-chain, logistics, transportation, product design, market survey, etc. • Informatics based process monitoring and control, e.g., intelligent manufacturing and predictive maintenance, computer network intrusion detection, bank or insurance fraud monitoring/control.

  13. Why ISyE is a Hot Major? • (System View) Human-management issues are integrated with machine-technology solutions. • Our system engineering approach covers every aspects of a product/process design, operation, improvement, maintenance, sell and retention activities. Students are trained to work in a team environment bringing expertise from various disciplines together. Human needs are considered in technological solutions.

  14. What Does Alumni Network Contribute? 1. (Alumni network) There are about 300 undergraduate students, 200 MSs and 30 Ph.D.s graduated each year in Atlanta. The executive master program has more than 100 graduates working as senior managers, directors and VPs. We hope to graduate 5-10 students (and more in the future) each year in the SJTU’s dual degree program.

  15. Alumni’s Contribution • (Donation) ISyE and ECE are the two top schools in Georgia Tech with the most amount of alumni donation for student scholarships, faculty endowments and unrestricted gifts. • Students’ Practicum (senior design) Projects, Internships and Job Placements rely on alumni’s help greatly. ISyE dominates several business sectors (e.g., logistics, supply-chains, manufacturing) in placing our graduates into their companies.

  16. Industry Connection • Our ISyE students have interned in Sabre to solve complex airline scheduling problems and so on. The salary for internship there is very high. • Our faculty-student team visited GE in the past summer. GE loves to hire our students for intern and regular jobs. Some students can be six-sigma leaders and the others can utilize their dual MS degree skills, e.g., electrical engineering and ISyE’s modeling, optimization and experimental design, to develop new technology for them.

  17. Industry Connection • Our faculty-staff-student team in ISyE program will work very hard to offer industrial practicum class in the next summer for recruiting companies (e.g., GE and Sabre) for providing students hands-on project experience. This opens doors for getting the connections to place students in company jobs. • The program will utilize our network with managers in GT-ISyE’s executive MS program for internships and job placements. Many managers in that program are Chinese, and the international companies sponsoring those managers have branches in China.

  18. Ph.D. Studies • Since our dual MS degree students received great education, the program faculty members will recommend them to US universities. The ISyE programs have established top-tier reputation (comparable with MIT and Stanford) and the professors in the program are internationally recognized. Students having recommendation from this program would have no difficulty in getting into good programs in US, especially in the ISyE/IE areas.

  19. Ph.D. Studies • The program is exploring “prelim exam” similar to ECE’s dual MS degree program at SJTU or “certification” similar to the offers in several programs at GT-Atlanta. However, ISyE/IE fields recognize recommendations from highly regarded professors truly. If a student has the Ph.D. study talent, our professors will be able to place the student into top US programs. Now, at least one students (out of six students) in the first year SJTU-GT-ISyE program will receive the Ph.D. admission from GT-ISyE school.

  20. Is this program better than studies in the US for MS degrees? Yes in the following sense. 1. The US economy is not strong. Many companies do not hire people without permanent residence (“green card”) or citizen status. Chinese economy is much stronger than almost all other countries. Many international companies have branches at China. Compared with students received US/European degrees coming back to China for job hunting, the dual degree students here have an edge.

  21. Is this program better? • Students in the program can gain practicum and internship experience with companies. Many of the companies have opening positions. Knowing people in companies and using strong network built by the program can give dual degree students the edge over students came back from study abroad. • For students looking for Ph.D. study opportunities, since our professors work very closely to students in the program, they can spot students’ talents and make strong recommendation to US programs. Students in the US MS programs are educated in much larger size classes and seldom know professors. They do not have the practicum or/and internship experience.

  22. Is this program better? • Students in the program can earn two MS degrees in possibly different majors in the same duration as finishing one MS degree in SJTU. With one major in a focused area such as electrical engineering and the other in the system engineering training students leadership and management skills the dual degree students have a edge over regular MS students in China or US in the job market competition, especially in the latter promotion stage. • The program will require students to sharpen English spoken and writing skills. This helps students to find jobs in the international companies and study Ph.D. degree in US.

  23. Is this program better? • Students in the program can earn two MS degrees in possibly different majors in the same duration as finishing one MS degree in SJTU. 24. Why and how Does the Program Train Engineering Managers? • To improve competitiveness of Chinese companies in world wide competition, company managers need to have not only visionary view, entrepreneurship and leadership, but also technical skill such as systems engineering and analytical thinking and quantitative analysis. ISyE’s dual degree program trains students to equip with all these skills and personal traits. • The systems engineering training include courses in optimization, uncertainty modeling, data collection and information fusion, management of complex systems (e.g., manufacturing, logistics, transportation, supply-chain and warehouse inventory), quantitative and computational finance, process monitoring and control, computer simulation, etc.
