  1. The Cardiovascular System Chapter 6 Section 1 pg. 176

  2. A collection of organs that transports blood throughout the body. • Includesyour • Heart • Blood • Veins • Capillaries • Arteries • Lymphatic System Cardiovascular System

  3. Creates pressure every time it beats. • Pressure moves blood to ever cell in your body in your cardiovascular system • Contains your heart and 3 types of blood vessels Your Cardiovascular System

  4. Made of mostly cardiac muscle • Size of your fist • Divided into a right and left side separated by a thick wall • Right side  pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs • Left side  pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body • Each side has upper and lower chambers • Upper chamber = atrium (plural, atria) • Lower chamber = ventricle The Heart

  5. Flaplike structures called valves are located between the atria and ventricles and in places where large arteries are attached to the heart • Prevents blood from going backward • The “lub-dub, lub-dub” sound of a beating heart is caused by the valves closing The Heart

  6. Blood vessels Arteries, Capillaries, and Veins

  7. Blood vessel that carries blood AWAY from the heart • Thick walls, contains a layer of smooth muscle. • Each heartbeat pumps blood into your arteries at high pressure • Blood pressure • Stretch and usually strong enough to stand the pressure • Your pulse is caused by the rhythmic change in your blood pressure Arteries

  8. Nutrients, oxygen, and other substances must leave blood and get to your body’s cells. Carbon dioxide and other wastes leave body cells and are carried away by blood. • Capillary is a tiny blood vessel that allows these exchanges • Only one cell thick • So narrow that blood cells must pass through then in single file • No cell on the body is more than 3 or 4 cells away from a capillary Capillaries

  9. After leaving the capillaries, blood enters veins • Veins carry blood back to the heart • As blood travels through veins, valves in the veins keep the blood from flowing backward • When skeletal muscles contract, they squeeze nearby veins and help push blood toward the heart. Veins

  10. Pulmonary circulation • The flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart through the pulmonary arteries, capillaries, and veins • Systemic Circulation • The flow of blood from the heart to all parts of the body and back to the heart 2 Types of Circulation

  11. Cardiovascular Problems

  12. Happens when cholesterol builds up inside of blood vessels • Cholesterol buildup causes the blood vessel to become narrower and less elastic • When an artery that supplies blood to the heart becomes blocked, it can result in a heart attack • Caused by high blood pressure Atherosclerosis

  13. AKA hypertension • The higher the BP the greater the risk for a heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, and stroke • Stroke • When a blood vessel in the brain becomes clogged or ruptures • As a result part of the brain receives no oxygen High Blood Pressure

  14. Heart Attack • happens when heart muscle cells die and part of the heart muscle is damaged • Heart Failure • Happens when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs Heart Attacks and Failure
