  2. Get Set For Success • Effective time management starts with goal setting • Goal setting informs what is important to you and what you are working towards • Short term goals • Steps toward meeting your long term goals • Takes less than a year to accomplish • Long term goals • Takes one or more years to accomplish

  3. Goal Setting • Make sure both your long term and short term goals are specific and measureable • Long term: “I will maintain my HOPE scholarship until I graduate from college.” • Short term: “I will maintain a 3.0 GPA and do what is needed to earn at least a B in my classes.” • Write your goals down and review them periodically • Practice makes perfect: Volunteers?

  4. Where Does Your Time Go • Observable activities • Activities that other people can see you doing • Examples: sleeping, exercising, studying • Make a list of 8-10 observable activities you have participated in during the past 24 hours • Estimate how much time you spent on each activity

  5. Making It All Fit: A Visual Demonstration

  6. Setting Your Priorities Straight Covey, Stephen R. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1989.

  7. Where Do You Stand • Review your list of observable activities • Write each activity into the appropriate quadrant on your graph • Using the time estimates you wrote for each activity, circle the quadrant in which you spend most of your time

  8. Priorities Are Personal • Spending time with family or attending religious services may be especially important for one individual and not important for another. • Things to think about: • In which quadrant did you spend the majority of your time? • What happens if you spend the majority of your time in quadrant 1 activities? Quadrant 4 activities? • What is the most ideal quadrant for school work and studying?

  9. The Stress Factor QUADRANT 1 (IMPORTANT & URGENT) QUADRANT 4 (NOT IMPORTANT & NOT URGENT) Remember to consider how your health and quality of work can be affected by spending too much time in quadrants 1 or 4

  10. Tools for Time Management • Time management tools come in a variety of formats. Individuals can use traditional pen and paper tools or electronic devices to organize their time • Yearly/monthly/weekly/daily calendar • Weekly to-do list • Post-it notes • Online software (Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.) • Mobile Devices
