  1. IP3 and WC2N Data Management and Outreach Activities Julie Friddell, IP3 Network Manager University of Saskatchewan WC2N Workshop 4 October 2008

  2. IP3 Outreach Activities – 2008 IP3 Users Community Workshop– Canmore, AB, March 2008 60 participants Public event: Mayor Ron Casey, John Pomeroy IP3 science presentation Workshop: Introduction to IP3 themes and models, identification of specific needs of water managers (hydro, mining, regulatory water management, parks, ski areas, petroleum, etc.) for cold regions hydrological data, information, and modelling tools Needs (examples): More and consistent long-term monitoring – specific variables (groundwater, stream temp,...) and locations, access to data, user-friendly models for operations, more outreach/newsletter/interaction/ collaboration/workshops/sharing and interpretation of research results Meeting report in EOS (AGU), 89/28, 8 July 2008:Cold Regions Hydrology and Water Management: Bridging the Gap

  3. IP3 Outreach Activities - 2008 Cold Regions Hydrological Model (CRHM) Training Workshops • June 2008 – Waterloo and Calgary • 40+ people at each • Participants downloaded CRHM from the IP3 website prior to Workshop • John Pomeroy and students presented: Basics of required cold regions hydrology Purpose and structure of CRHM Examples of operation through creation and running of a “model” project Analysis of the output Tutorial exercises to show participants how to create their own hydrological model

  4. IP3-WC2N Joint Supplement Proposal: Integration of Data Management and Outreach for Cold Regions Hydrological, Cryospheric, and Climate Science in Western and Northern Canada

  5. IP3-WC2N Joint Supplement Proposal: Integration of Data Management and Outreach for Cold Regions Hydrological, Cryospheric, and Climate Science in Western and Northern Canada Why joint proposal? 1. Both networks examine and predict processes and change in the coupled climate-hydrological-glaciology of Canada's high altitudes and latitudes 2. Two networks have similar user/stakeholder communities – water resources and environmental management

  6. Joint Proposal Goals Integrate data management and outreach activities of two networks, to better deliver and explain science results to provincial and federal policy makers, resource managers, the public, and the media Better integrate climate, cryospheric, and hydrological science in Canada to address changes expected in climate and water resources in the future

  7. Major Proposed Activities Hirenew personnel: Data and Information Manager Standardize and archive all network data & metadata Produce data and information products – web visualizations, water balance calculations, etc. Train users in hydrological models (CRHM, MESH)‏ Outreach Coordinator(s)‏ Produce outreach materials Inform users, local and regional organizations/communities, media, public, schools about hydrology, cryosphere, and climate issues in Canadian Rockies and North Hold joint workshops 2009, 2010 – User-Scientist, Network

  8. Award announced July 2008! $295,000 total award over 2 years, to be shared between 2 networks $170,000 for 2 new employees $38,000 for Travel and Materials/Supplies $37,000 for Outreach Materials $50,000 for Workshops

  9. Next steps Hire Data Manager and Outreach Coordinator Expand IP3 Users' Advisory Committee to include WC2N partners Establish WC2N data management policy Enhance IP3 website with new data and model products for scientists' and users' use Plan training sessions and workshops for users and scientists Produce outreach materials including public information displays for federal and provincial parks Permanently archive all network data

  10. IP3 Users’ Advisory Committee Public and private: community, government, industry,… Goal is to provide information that can be used in regional planning/policy making, streamflow/flood forecasting, water management, environmental conservation, and northern development

  12. Upcoming Meetings IP3 3rd Workshop to be held at Westmark Hotel, Whitehorse, Yukon, 12-15 November 2008 • Other meetings to be planned: • User-Scientist Workshop(s) – spring 2009 • CRHM Training and other user workshop(s) – where, when? • Joint network Workshop – Fall 2009? where?

  13. Rocky Mountain Hydrometeorology Observatory Conference: Monitoring and Prediction of Western Water and Weather 8-10 December 2008, Canmore, AB To determine: Current status/duplication of water and weather monitoring in Rocky Mountains Gaps in monitoring locations and parameters How to create and support a hydrometeorological observational network for the long term that will support improved forecasting and predictive modelling
