Format of the workshop: • Presentations from experts • Argo Program Overview • Steve Piotrowicz • Mathieu Belbeoch • Howard Freeland • Judy Gray • Data Management • Thierry Carval • Claudia Schmid • South Atlantic Physical & Biological Characteristics • Claudia Schmid • (Bernard Bourles) - delivered by Claudia Schmid • Regina Folorunsho • Use of Argo Data • Sylwia Trzaska • Judy Gray

  8. Hands on sessions for training • How to use the Argo Information Center • How to obtain the Argo data from the GDACs • How to load it into different software packages (Ocean Data View, MatLab, Scilab) • How to create plots using the • software

  9. The use of the Argo Data • For studies of climate impacts on society • Scientific research in the Pacific Ocean

  10. Development of Action Plan to Implement Workshop Recommendations Panel: A.K. Armah, Mathieu Belbeoch, Thierry Carval, Regina Folorunsho, Howard Freeland, Judy Gray, Steve Piotrowicz, Claudia Schmid, & Sylwia Trzaska Argo Capacity Building Workshop, Ghana, December 2006

  11. What was accomplished up to date?

  12. Create an ‘Argo Capacity Building’ list-server with all e-mail addresses of the participants Subject: South Atlantic Regional Argo Centre (SAARC) Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 17:17:11 +0100 From: Mathieu Belbeoch, Argo TC <belbeoch@jcommops.org> To: argo-saarc@jcommops.org Dear colleagues, welcome on the argo-saarc mailing list, dealing with South Atlantic Argo Regional Centre issues. Finally I did not created a dedicated list for west africa. I already maintain 15 Argo mailing lists ... Argo Steering Team and Data Management Team co-chairs are registered on this list as well as attendees of the 2 first SAARC meetings, and myself. You have all been registered on the argo general mailing list too: argo@jcommops.org Feel free to use these lists. Non subscribers messages will be moderated. Best Regards, Mathieu

  13. Create a website based on the workshop and alert participants to the location

  14. Get Argo journal articles to participants (web site)

  15. Provide to participants: a CD of the presentations, DVD of data, and contact information to order DVDs in the future -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [argo-saarc] Argo Data DVD Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 16:15:14 +0100 From: Mathieu Belbeoch, Argo TC <belbeoch@jcommops.org> To: argo-saarc@jcommops.org CC: Charles Sun <Charles.Sun@noaa.gov>, NODC.Services@noaa.gov Dear "South Atlantic Argo" colleagues, Some of you have received a recent version of the Argo DVD at the last workshop in Ghana. Some others may have not. Please send your queries to receive an Argo DVD ROM to Charles Sun (USA NODC), including of course your regular mail address. Indicate by the way when you would like to receive an update so Charles Sun team can organize the workload. Please keep in mind that this distribution of DVD is in a finalization phase and has no substantial funding. i.e; don't ask an update every month . Give us feedback on your data use at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=460472024285 Regards, Mathieu

  16. Provide to participants products using Argo and other oceanographic data. Use the SA ARC list serve to distribute information about what is available

  17. Access to the tools to use the data Information on MatLab and other data analysis tools (including small demo programs for some software, webpage)

  18. African Participation is Needed Argo Float Donation Programbelbeoch@jcommops.org Deployment Opportunities elizabeth.forteza@noaa.gov

  19. Article(s) in EOS & FAO Magazines Led by A.K. Armah, Regina Folorunsho, Judy Gray, and Bob Molinari • Proposed topics for the Article • 1. Argo in Western Africa: Enhancing Physical Oceanography through capacity building • 2. Addressing food security, biodiversity, and the ecosystem in West Africa through capacity building • 3. Enriching the science of Oceanography through capacity building in Western Africa. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions on AIC website) – send questions to the workshop trainers, use the mailing list

  20. Still to be done • A SA ARC-wide meeting, next time in South America (2007) • Have a meeting in Africa in 2008 • Target technical experts for next meeting(s) • Present interpreted results from the area using Argo and ancillary data – a science workshop • Create a Steering Committee for science workshop, solicit contributions, include East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands – A.K. Armah & Regina Folorunsho, Affian, Bernard Bourles, South Africa Representative(s) (e.g., Chris Reason)

  21. Participate in the GLOBE Program • Create posters and other materials for teachers to use in their classes; use the teacher manuals and student materials available in other Argo areas • Fellowships for African students • Post fellowship opportunities to our website

  22. Outreach Activities derived from the US Argo float donations to Argentina

  23. DEPLOYED BY R/V A.R.A. “PUERTO DESEADO”

  24. DEPLOYED BY ICEBREAKER A.R.A. “ALMIRANTE IRIZAR”

  25. In November 2006, within the framework of Argo related activities, the Argentine Naval Hydrographic Center launched a public awareness/capacity building project involving local high schools similar to the “Adopt a Buoy” program. The idea is to promote development of projects at several school, including the adoption of the donated floats.

  26. Appropriate contacts were identified in several schools and science teachers were provided with information about Argo, data accessibility and software. Lt.Cdr A.Troisi (SHN), Eng. Pablo Gonzalez (San Felipe Neri , Mataderos School), Lic. Jorge Mermoz (Jesus en el Huerto de los Olivos School), Prof Robert Foot ("San Marcos” School, San Isidro). Both teachers and students count on the support of the SHN and the NODC.

  27. The initial stage of this program will start in March 2007, including an award to be presented to the best project of the year. According to local sources, the idea generated great enthusiasm among those involved and good results are expected.
