Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS The Big Idea • Reduce financial barriers for Idaho juniors and seniors to: • Take dual credit courses • Take college credit bearing exams • Take professional-technical exams • Thereby increasing college-going rates in Idaho. The Fast Forward program supports the State Board of Education’s goal that 60 percent of Idahoans between the ages of 25 and 34 attain a postsecondary degree or credential by 2020. Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Eligible Courses / Exams • Dual Credit Courses • Allows high school students to simultaneously earn credit toward a high school diploma and a postsecondary degree or certificate. • Taught at the high school, on college campuses or online. • Credits earned become part of the student’s permanent college record. Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Eligible Courses / Exams • Advanced Placement (AP) Exams • Administered by the College Board. • AP exams are typically offered at the conclusion of AP courses. • Scoring well on AP exams may provide students the opportunity to earn college credits (at the discretion of Institutions of Higher Education). • An institution-specific AP exam score and credit earned table can be accessed at: • https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Eligible Courses / Exams • Professional / Technical Education • Allows students to simultaneously earn secondary and postsecondary technical credits. • Industry certification exams, such as Certified Pharmacy Technician, Microsoft Certifications or American Welding Society provide evidence of a student’s competence in specific areas. • More information can be found at: • http://www.pte.idaho.gov/ IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Eligible Courses / Exams • International Baccalaureate (IB) • Administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization. • Offers a comprehensive liberal arts course of study for juniors and seniors. • IB students take end-of-course exams that may qualify for college credit (depending upon the institution of interest). • More information can be found at: • http://www.ibo.org/diploma/index.cfm IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Eligible Courses / Exams • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) • CLEP is administered by the College Board. • CLEP exams test mastery of college-level material. • College credit is earned through passing CLEP exams (credit by examination) and contribute to expedited degree completion. • Additional information can be found at: • http://clep.collegeboard.org/ IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Program Overview • New program established by the legislature (SB 1233) for FY15. • Provides an amount of $200 for every junior, and $400 for every senior in Idaho public schools. • The funds are available for dual credit, concurrent credit and: • Advanced Placement Exams (AP) • College Level Examination Program (CLEP) • International Baccalaureate Exams (IB) • Professional Certificate Exams (PTE) IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Fast Forward Program Overview • Fast Forward is intended for those ineligible for the Dual Credit for Early Completers program. • Fast Forward may be used to pay an amount not to exceed 75% of the cost of eligible courses and examinations. • Student participation does not impact state funding distributions (ADA) for local school districts or public charter schools. Fast Forward ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Regarding Advising and Planning • The key to maximizing advanced opportunities involves intentional planning and a • commitment to doing one’s best work. • Clarity on an intended undergraduate program of study should inform dual credit / • college-credit bearing examactivity. • Dual credits that don’t apply to program completion may result in wasted time, • effort and money (general university requirements are a good place to start). • Grades earned through dual credit are reflected on secondary, and postsecondary • transcripts, failing or dropping courses will impact both.   20. 8 in 6 ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS 8 in 6 Program Overview • Enrolled students complete high school graduation requirements at an accelerated rate through overload / summer coursework starting as early as 7th grade. • The SDE will reimburse 8 in 6 courses at up to $225 per course. Dual Credit for Early Completers ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Dual Credit for Early Completers Overview • Students can take up to 18 credits per semester, or 12 credits per trimester term of dual credits ($75 per credit reimbursement). • Students can take up to 6 college credit-bearing advanced placement examinations per semester, or 4 per trimester ($90 per examination reimbursement). ADVANCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IDAHO STUDENTS Leveraging Advanced Opportunities 46 Minimum Credits (17 Electives) • Typical semester course load- 7 credits / courses (14 per year) • 8 in 6 - complete 2 HS electives in grades 7-8 (overload / summer) • 8 in 6 - complete 1 HS core and 1 elective in grade 9 • 8 in 6 - complete 1 HS core and 1 elective in grade 10 • 8 in 6 - complete 1 HS core and 1 elective in grade 11 • Results in 8 open courses in grade 12 for dual credit or AP courses • Typical dual credit / AP college credits offered per course = 3 24 Credits of Advanced Opportunities 2013 Cost of Undergrad Credit = $301.50* 24 Credits x $301.50 = $7,236.00* IDAHO STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
