Computer Accounts • UCSBnetID • G Suite for Education UCSBnetID@ucsb.edu = Google Email, Google Drive, etc • Bren Desktop account: login to windows desktops, brenwifi • Same account name, different password (which you can’t change) • Scissors mark is meant for you to tear at that, and store separately, no one ever seems to do that.
Activity • Login to the Bren Desktop that you are sitting in front of • On your phone – connect to Bren Wifi , and login with your Bren Desktop account • Bit.ly/brenphonewhitelist Building Access: 8-5 m-f or • Bit.ly/brenbuildingaccess
Bren Desktop Info • H drive – your home folder • Create the directory hierarchy how you like (fall2019/ESM203 …) • Printing – release station (penguin, oreo, bluebird) • Files on H drive get backed up, the C drive don’t • Printing: • $0.03 a sheet / $30 a year, color is more expensive • Next year – another $30 + GP dollars • Release Stations
Working Spaces • GIS – instructional lab – new – 27” monitors • Cave – workstations, collaborative spaces, phone charging station, mac – 44” curved screen, 2 machines with Adobe CC, standup desks • Library – 6 machines, laptop station, standup desks, 1 machine with Adobe CC • 3rd Floor GP – workstations reserved for 2nd years, but open if not in use, couches, study tables, windows • Bonsai, Manzanita, Visitor Center, classrooms • Other places at UCSB – computer labs, library etc.
Cloud Storage • Your personal Gmail / Google Drive account • Your UCSB Google account – unlimited storage while a student • Google Drive – shared / collaborative folders • Box – another cloud storage • Best to move away from your personal account for your time at UCSB for drive storage.
Laptops • During the course of the year, we get students coming in with a poorly behaving machine, generally TOO old, old battery, slow hard drive. • We can’t work on these machines, but we can assist in assessing and provide advice on moving forward. • We generally get a few machines, where water was spilled on the laptop, having apple care is good for that. • If you have Windows 7, you will need to upgrade or get a new machine. • Let us tell you about ransomware, do you backup your laptop?
