  1. Government Corruption in Africa By Georgia Bireley, Matt Beaverson, Calvin Cagle, and Kate Chadwick

  2. What is government corruption? • When the government officials use power given to them for illegitimate private gain. • Consists of; bribery, trading in influence, patronage, and involvement in organized crime. • For example, South African Willie Hofmeyr, spent more than 80,000$ of tax payers money on a trip to Switzerland to visit his girlfriend, who was in jail.

  3. Who got paid? • It all starts with a kickback, which is an official's share of misappropriated funds allocated from his or her organization involved in corrupt bidding. • For an example, pretend that a politician is in charge of deciding how to spend some public funds. He could give a contract to a company that’s not the best bidder, or give more than they deserve. The company benefits in exchange for betraying the public.

  4. Why did they get paid? • Because most of government politicians were bribed into it by other companies who were going to rat them out about what was really going on in the inside. • Most of the government officials referred to favoring supporters for example with government employment.
