  3. A meal is being cooked • Can you see any similarities in the way a meal is cooked in your house? • Can you see any differences in the way a meal is cooked at your house?

  4. What is the source of energy being used? • Where do you think the people get this source? • Why do you think they use this source? • What advantages can you think of to cooking with this source? • What disadvantages can you think of to cooking with this source?

  5. Disadvantages To Cooking with Wood • Fires need to be tended which takes time • Inhaling smoke and particulates causes respiratory diseases • It takes time to gather wood • Contributes to deforestation

  6. Stretch your thinking! • Can you think of another way that people in Zambia could cook? What would you suggest? Talk to your team and list at least three ideas.

  8. What is the energy source? • What are the advantages of using this source of energy? • What are the disadvanatges of using this source of energy?

Advantages • The construction of a solar oven is cheap and easy • Time doesn’t need to be spent gathering wood • A solar oven doesn’t need to be tended which means time can be freed up to do other things • Solar ovens don’t create smoke they are healthier • Solar ovens do not contribute to deforestation

  11. The photos show homemade Kerosene lamps • Kerosene is a combustible liquid derived from petroleum. Kerosene lampsare commonly used to light homes in rural Zambia as electricity supplies are unreliable. • Can you think of any disadvantages to this source of energy?

  12. Disadvanatges • Kerosene is expensive • It pollutes and is very smelly • Doesn’t provide great light to do homework, read etc. • It’s a non-renewable source of energy • Can easily start a fire
