  2. Objectives • Understand the premise of the Horizon Report and Gartner’s Hype Cycle. • Understand how the Horizon Report and Gartner’s Hype Cycle can be used to plan for effective technology adoption.

  3. When Alice in Wonderland was trying to decide which way to go during her travels, she asked the Cheshire Cat,

  4. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

  5. "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

  6. "I don't much care where," said Alice.

  7. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

  8. If you don’t care where you are going, then it really doesn't’t matter which choice you make. However, if you do care where you are going and if you know where that is, then it not only makes a difference which way you go, but it makes it easier for you to decide.

  9. WHICH WAY? Deciding which way to go requires first that you decide where you want to go to.

Implications for administrators • Pay attention to the Hype Cycle and Horizon Reports for technology adoption • Plan for the long-term with technology • Try to put new technology in the hands of teachers first (6-12 months ideal) • Make sure security and infrastructure is solid (wireless access, bandwidth, security) • Work to limit distractions for students to promote college readiness (policies and practices)

  15. 1 Year or less adoption-Mobile learning Tablets, smartphones, and mobile apps have become too capable, too ubiquitous, and too useful to ignore, and their distribution defies traditional patterns of adoption, both by consumers, where even economically disadvantaged families find ways to make use of mobile technology, and in schools, where the tide of opinion has dramatically shifted when it comes to mobiles in schools.
