  1. ECE164.02 Group 2 – Presentation 8 Gigabit Ethernet TxRx Andrew Tupper April 15, 2004

  2. Current & Completed Tasks Nearly Completed Aggressive Tx & Rx Boards Performed Tx & Rx Troubleshooting Optically Tested Tx & Rx Performed Optical BER test on Tx Tested Loop-Back Capability Measured Optical Power at VCSEL Updated Gantt Chart Gigabit Ethernet Summary 4/8-4/15 Upcoming Tasks • Complete Aggressive Rx (need SMA connectors) • Continue Testing (cross talk, Rx BER, performance under attenuation, etc…) • Prepare Final Presentation and Report Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  3. Gigabit Ethernet Aggressive TxRx • Due to problems with conservative design, assembled Aggressive TxRx. • Completed Assembly, except for missing SMAs • No radical heating to indicate short circuits Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  4. Gigabit Ethernet Tx Optical Test • Aggressive Tx design works optically Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  5. Gigabit Ethernet Tx Optical Test • Scope set to trigger from waveform • 1 sec persistence • No attenuation • Scope set to trigger from recovery clock • 1 sec persistence • No attenuation Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  6. Gigabit Ethernet Tx BER Test • Connected data from optical Rx in pattern generator • 0dB attenuation • BER tester set to average for infinite amount of time Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  7. Gigabit Ethernet Tx BER Test • 0dB attenuation • Several minute test yielded BER of 0.0E-11 • 0dB attenuation • One hour+ test yielded BER of 0.3E-12 Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  8. Gigabit Ethernet Rx Optical Test • Tested aggressive Rx with optical output from pattern generator • No SMA connectors on Rx, so used probe instead Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  9. Gigabit Ethernet Rx Optical Test • 0 dB attenuation • 1 second persistence • Aggressive Rx works!! Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  10. Gigabit Ethernet Loop-Back Test • Looped Tx output into PD on aggressive Rx • 0dB attenuation • Stylish Goggles! Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  11. Gigabit Ethernet Loop-Back Test • Stage could not be used because Tx output interfered • Even while holding, eye was detected! Group 2 – Presentation 8 April 15, 2004

  12. Gigabit Ethernet Gantt Chart
