Mary Evans Elementary Mission Statement • All students, with support of staff, parents, and community, will be provided a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that empowers them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be lifelong learners and citizens of good character who are prepared to contribute to an ever-changing, global society.

  3. Mary Evans Elementary Vision • Mary Evans’ students will be able to think critically and creatively, solve problems, and will learn to communicate effectively. Our students will learn to work effectively as individuals and as group members, develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and respect for others, recognize the contributions of individuals, groups and cultures in society, and demonstrate civic responsibility.

  6. Rider Expectations Care about others and be honest. Obey teacher and adult directions. Respect all people and property. Keep all body parts and objects to myself. Yearn to be punctual and prepared daily. 9 weeks Report Card Equivalent: Outstanding 0-4 signatures Satisfactory 5-7 signatures Needs Improvement 8-11 signatures Unsatisfactory 12+ signatures

Communication 5th • Rider Communication Chart – calendar of monthly events and conduct signatures (sign daily) • Daily Agenda (sign daily) • “Wednesday Folder” – Weekly communication and graded papers will be sent home in this folder. Grades that will be recorded in the grade book will be circled. (sign weekly) • Emails and phone calls will be returned after instructional time or during our planning period. • 5th grade teacher planning period is 8:00-8:45am daily.

Grades • Grade Average- 60% of your child's average comes from daily work and homework; 40% comes from tests, quizzes, and projects. • Late work - For each day an assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted. • Make up work- For each day of an excused absence, one day will be given to complete the assignment(s). • Grading Period- Report cards will be sent home every 9 weeks.

  12. Volunteers • A “Volunteer Background Check” is requiredfor all volunteers and field trip chaperones. This includes Sky Ranch. • Please register quickly online at www.allenisd.org

  13. 5th Grade Expectations • Report Cards and Progress Reports are sent electronically • Agenda – homework, tests, and projects – daily parent signature • Check the website weekly for “Currently We’re Working On.” • District website online curriculum

  14. Things Parents Can Do to Help • Help your child practice multiplication facts daily. • See that your child reads at least 20 minutes a day. • Help review spelling and vocabulary words for all subjects. • Go over study sheets for all subjects with your child and ask them questions from it.

  15. Skyward Gradebook • Gradebook is easily accessible to students and their families using Skyward. • Login using your family access information to view your student’s calendar and grades. • You will find a link on the Evans webpage. The Evans webpage can be found under the “select a school” link at allenisd.org.

  16. Math • Daily homework • Math journals used to reinforce objectives • Math Textbooks issued in 5th grade • Practice multiplication facts nightly.

  17. Reading Our Reading curriculum includes: • Teaches practical reading skills and strategies • Helps students to take ownership of their learning and develop a deeper love of reading • Students will create a Reader’s Notebook and Poetry Notebook this year. • Scholastic Magazine Orders • Reading homework daily

  18. Writing • Various types of writing throughout the year • Word Work, Poetry, Writing Conventions and Handwriting throughout the year • Writing Journal

  19. Social Studies • United States History • Map Skills • States and Capitals • 1565-Present • USA Studies Magazine Order

  20. Science • Science journals • Quizzes and study guides • Science Fair in December • Life Science; Physical Science; Earth Science • Stemscopes

Attendance Regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his/her education – to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day’s learning on the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student’s mastery.

  24. Two state laws Compulsory Attendance - the required presence of school-aged children in school (unexcused days) Attendance for Credit – to receive credit or a final grade in a class, a student in grades Kinder-12th must attend at least 90% of the days the class is offered (unexcused & excused) Refer to the AISD Student Handbook, pages 35-40, for more information.

  25. Important information • Our campus opens at 7:25 • Students must be in class at 7:45 • Kinder, 1st, 2nd and 6th grades gather in the gym • 3rd, 4th, and 5th gather in the café • Teachers pick up their students at 7:40 so all are in class by 7:45

  26. Missing School • Please call the absence line (972) 236-0600 Ext. 3373 • Arriving Late – please park and walk your student in • Absent – notes must be received by the school within 3 days of the absence • Parent Note - Skyward is the best way to send • Doctor Note – Parent may hand deliver to receptionist when checking student back into school or parent may email Alison.Wills@allenisd.org a picture of the note • Parent and Doctor Notes – may be hand delivery by student(s) to their homeroom teacher • Parent Notes must include • Student name, date(s) of the absence, reason for the absence, parent signature (Skyward access fulfills this) • Doctor Notes must include • Student name, date of appointment, doctor signature • If student needs to be absent for more than the appointment, per doctor’s order, dates must be included on the doctor’s note.

  27. Entering a Skyward Note • Log-in to Skyward Parent Access Portal using your parent login and password • Click on Attendance • Click on Attendance Request • Choose Add a Request • Choose All Day to report a full day absence or Uncheck All Day to enter start and end times • Fill in the Comment Section with reason for student absence • Choose Save
