  2. Yawning • A yawn is a reflex of inhalation and exhalation • It draws more oxygen into the bloodstream

  3. Reasons for yawning • Some reasons we yawn are: • Tiredness • Boredom • Stress • Overworking • Emotions • Awakening hunger

  4. Physical needs for yawning • These are some hypotheses for physical reasons of yawning: • When our blood needs more oxygen • To regulate body temperature • Chemicals in our brain that affect moods and emotions could cause us to yawn

  5. Other animals that yawn • Dogs • Cats • Adelie penguins • Emperor penguins • birds

  6. Is yawning contagious? • Nobody really knows of yawning contagious • Some people just think it’s a way of synchronizing behavior

Superstitions about yawning • A person must cover his/her mouth when they yawn or else your soul will escape • Yawning is a sign that danger is near • Counting a person's teeth while they are yawning robs them of one year of life for every tooth counted • A yawn may be a sign that one is afflicted by the evil eye • Frequent yawning by a woman indicates she is likely to be committing adultery, which results in a lack of sleep

Fun Facts • Reading about yawning makes you yawn • 40-60% of people who see a picture (or video) of someone yawning will yawn themselves • Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life. • When one person in a group yawns over half of the people will yawn within five minutes, and the rest will at least be tempted to yawn. • The average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds. • Yawns in male students had a longer duration than those in female students.
