  1. The Symbols of Easter The Stone & The Tomb

  2. Theme Passage 1 Peter 3 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit

  3. 1) The Stone- Matt 28:1-2 1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

  4. 1) The Stone- Matt 28:1-2 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  5. 1) The Stone- Matt 28:1-2 The stone was a symbol of separation between a Holy God and a sinful people, whose sentence was death because of sin.

  6. 1) The Stone- Matt 28:1-2 When the stone is rolled away, the grave opens and gives hope that we too can overcome death & the disconnect with God.

  7. Matt 27 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

  8. At Jesus’ death God tore the veil of the Temple and opened His presence to bring hope. At Jesus’ resurrection God rolled back the stone and opened up the grave to bring life.

  9. Do I still see myself as separated from God?

  10. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb…

  11. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

  12. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

  13. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, & ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet & worshiped him.

  14. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 The tomb being empty is central to the Christian belief in victory & in assurance of heaven. In the resurrection Jesus defeats death and the sin that leads to death.

  15. 2) The Tomb- Matt 28:1, 5-9 Because He overcomes & is victorious, we too have the hope of victory & assurance of heaven

  16. Rom 4 25 Jesus was given to die for our sins, and he was raised from the dead to make us right with God. NCV

  17. Acts 5 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. NIV

  19. Rom 8 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

  20. Rom 8 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  21. “They may have mockingly crowned a king, they may have shamefully crucified a Savior- but when the end of the story is written, Jesus is established as the Lord of life and the Victor over every evil thing that man and Satan could throw at Him”

  22. Do I possess spiritual life? Am I living as if Jesus is alive?
