  3. How can I get involved? Types of Parental Involvement • Creating a space at home for your son/daughter to do their homework and reviewing their homework; encouraging them to do well in their academics • Attending parent-teacher conferences; communicating with the teacher about your child’s academic progress through their planners or via email. • Volunteering* in the classroom or through school wide organizations (includes making things at home for child’s class) • Viewing television programs (i.e. animal planet or documentaries) and attending cultural events that increase knowledge base. • Joining community organizations (i.e. Leon County Reading Council, Steele Collins Library; Urban League, FAMU CROP) FAMU DRS Parental Involvement Organizations • Family Involvement Committee • 2nd Tuesday or 3rd Tuesday • 4pm-5pm • Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) • 1st Monday of every month • 6pm-7pm • School Advisory Council (SAC) • 2nd Tuesday of every month • 6pm-7pm • College Reach Out Program • 1st Saturday of every month (Tucker Hall) • FCAT/EOC preparedness • College readiness Spring Title I Parent Meeting

  4. FAMU DRS 2012 School Grade FAMU DRS made a score of 893 Which is equivalent to a letter grade of “D”. We were 32 points away from maintaining a letter grade of “C”. We are still striving for a letter grade of an “A”.

  7. WHAT IS THE FCAT? • FCAT Sunshine State Standards (FCAT SSS) • Designed to measure students’ knowledge of reading, writing, mathematics, and science benchmarks from the Sunshine State Standards (SSS).

  12. FCAT (SSS)WHAT DO THE SCORES MEAN?Achievement Levels (1-5, Reading & Math) • Level 5 – This student has success with the most challenging content of the Sunshine State Standards. A student scoring a Level 5 answers most of the test questions correctly, including the most challenging questions. • Level 4 – This student has success with the challenging content of the Sunshine State Standards. A student scoring in Level 4 answers most of the test questions correctly, but may have only some success with questions that reflect the most challenging content. • Level 3 – This student has partial success with the challenging content of the Sunshine State Standards, but performance is inconsistent. A student scoring in Level 3 answers many of the test questions correctly but is generally less successful with questions that are the most challenging.

FCAT 2.0 Reading: Examples of Increased Rigor • Students will be asked more often to: • use reasonable prior knowledge, such as grade-appropriate vocabulary • make reasonable inferences that are not explicitly text-based • analyze information across a pair of texts, such as making comparisons of main ideas

  28. Algebra 1 EOC Assessment: Reporting Categories • Functions, Linear Equations, and Inequalities—Solves real-world problems involving relations and functions. Interprets graphs including the domain and range. Uses function notation and links equations to functions. Solves, graphs, and interprets linear equations and inequalities. (55%) • Polynomials—Performs operations on polynomials. Simplifies monomial expressions and factors polynomial expressions. (20%) • Rationals, Radicals, Quadratics, and Discrete Mathematics— Simplifies rational and radical expressions. Solves algebraic proportions. Performs operations on radical expressions. Interprets graphs of and solves quadratic equations. Performs set operations. Uses and interprets Venn diagrams. (25%)

  37. FCAT TESTING TIPS for PARENTS

  38. How Can I Help My Child? Don’t panic. We’ve been working hard all year, for the FCAT and BEYOND. Having said that, here are some useful suggestions. There is no “cramming” for the FCAT.

  39. FCAT TESTING TIPS • Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates. • Make sure your child gets enough sleep on the night before the tests. • Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school. • Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper. • Encourage your child to do well and leave your child on a positive note.

Tips Continued • Being anxious about your child’s test is normal; however, help your child stay stress free by remaining calm around them and by avoiding conflict the morning of the test. • Make sure your children leave their cell phones and ALL electronic devices at home because possession of a cell phone will lead to invalidation of the test.
