Pressure in Gases M.K.Rolley
Boyles law • Boyle discovered that for a fixed mass of gas the pressure is inversely proportional to the volume at constant temperature This can be expressed as PV= a constant or P1V1=P2V2 Where P1=initial pressure P2 = final pressure & V1=initial volume V2= final volume
Results PV= constant
Other Gas laws are: • Charles law: The Volume of a fixed mass of Gas is proportional to the absolute temperature • The Pressure Law; The pressure of a fixed mass is directly proportional to its absolute temperature • These may be combined to form the combined Gas equation:
Combined Gas Equation Note P and V may be in any appropriate units as long as the same units are used on both sides of the equation T must ALWAYS be in Degrees KELVIN (ie Centigrade +273)
Examples: 1. A fixed mass of gas at constant temperature has a volume of 500 cm3 at a pressure of 1 atm.What will its volume be at a pressure of 4 atm? 125cm3 a ) 300cm3 b)1800cm3 a) 10 atmos b) 0.2 atmos 4. The pressure of a gas at 27oC is 150kPa. Assuming volume is constant, What will the pressure be at a) 87oC b)127oC c)-83oC a) 180kpa b) 200kpa c) 95kpa
