Tight Times for External Funding • Universities are eager for external support • Sophisticated research is getting expensive • Competition for funding is intense • Paylines for federal funding are stringent • More applications are being unscored • Private funders are increasingly conservative • IRBs are growing cautious and demanding

  3. Funding Demands Sophistication • Only the very best applications get funded • The rich tend to get richer • Review boards play it safe • Applicants must hit hot research issues • Applicants must sell their studies • Research topics/methods must be targeted

  4. To Be Successful: Identify the Right Funding Sources • Federal funding agencies (NIH, NSF, CDC) • Foundation funding (RWJF, Kellogg, Kaiser) • System funding (Health Care Delivery Orgs.) • Seed funding (Universities & Prof. Assns.) • Collaborations with funded projects

  7. Prepare Effective Proposals • Seek assistance from grants experts • Get feedback from experienced grantees • Show relevance of problem addressed • Identify theoretical grounding • Justify and explain research design • Provide realistic timeline • Provide Details, Details, Details!

  8. Significance Issues • Demonstrate clear focus for the study • Provide strong rationale for study • Build your study on previous research • Show research utility (Who does it help?) • Match study design and goals (Can you achieve what you intend?)

  9. Methodological Issues • Provide relevant pilot data • Demonstrate validity, reliability of data • Include a focused number of variables • Set realistic success criteria • Describe a clear analytical plan • Control against data contamination • Clearly state next steps

  10. Sampling/Participant Issues • Use good comparison/control groups • Clearly justify study population • Show sampling method is appropriate • Explain minority recruitment strategies • Clearly state sample characteristics • Use appropriate consent forms • Do not overburden subjects

Expertise, Support, & Clarity • Demonstrate clear research expertise • Show synergy across research team • Provide strong letters of support • Complete all parts of the application • Provide correct and full citations • Make sure the application is clean/readable • Follow required style guidelines

  12. Theory Issues • Support assumptions with literature • Accurately explain theories/models • Be sure theories are compelling/relevant • Provide clear theoretical framework • Show connections between theory & study • Show how outcome measures match theory
