  3. INQUIRY QUESTIONS Undeclared Student IdentificationUsing data, what are the demographics of undeclared students at Skyline College? How do we identify undeclared students?  Choosing a Path/HouseHow will the college help undeclared students choose a house and a path? Do we see students who are undeclared choosing the Exploratory House or can they explore within a house? Should we have an undeclared house? If yes, what does it look like? How are students supported in transitioning out of the house?  Integrate Learning Communities/Special ProgramsCan learning communities be utilized as tool in helping undeclared students in the decision making process?  EquityHow do we ensure equity for undeclared students?  AssessmentWhat role can learning communities play in exploration? Which assessment measures will be used to measure the effectiveness of supporting students on deciding on a major.

  4. ACCOMPLISHMENTS & SUCCESSES Discussions … • Understanding –  • Who is an “Undecided Student” • Not a simple definition • House (Stand-alone Program) vs. Embedded Programs  • House – Initiates Self-Awareness process • Embedded – Continues Major/Career Awareness and Clarification • 3SP (Student Success and Support Program) • Abbreviated SEP vs. Comprehensive SEP • State Mandate – CSEP completed by end of 3rd semester or 15 units • Explorers Program • Spring 2018 – CRER 116 Deciding on a Major; Workshops; major counseling • Sources...Ellis, K. (2014) AcademicAdvisingExperiences of First-YearUndecidedStudents: A QualitativeStudy. NACADA Journal,  34(2), 42-49. Steele, G. 5. Challenges (& Opportunity) Challenges Lack of meaningful data available Expedited timeline  Limited understanding of project scope, definitions and expectations Opportunity Integration of new inquiry group   (Exploratory Course)

  6. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MOVING FORWARD Target Data Collection • MyMajor (Counseling Division) • Major Clarity Index • Counseling faculty input/implementation • Student perspectives • Continued discussions /exploration on how to best serve undecided students • Determination • House/Program vs. Embedded Programs vs. Hybrid • Collaboration with Counseling Division 3SP Workgroup • Begin efforts on integrating Exploratory Group

  7. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS • Commitment to provide on-going support and training as protocol evolves • Colleague pairings to be designated creating areas of specialization within academic disciplines • One yearly retreat coordinated to determine progress and areas of further inquiry • Information on MyMajor offered as FlexDay activity

  8. RESOURCES NEEDED • Data • “Up-front” data • Point of entry – CCC Apply • My Majors (expected February / March 2018) • Educational Goal & Major • Option to declare Undecided/Undeclared/Exploratory at point of entry • At present – • Student must declare a major  • Not all majors offered at Skyline College • Currently no option to declare exploratory (undeclared)status • Additional meeting time • Continued discussions • Analyze Data to inform House vs. Embedded program decision  • From Design Team Leadership: • Clear understanding – What is a Meta Major? • Definitive timeline
