  3. “Do A Christian's Sins Damn His Soul?“ "We take the position that a Christian's sins do not damn his soul. The way a Christian lives, what he says, his character, his conduct, or his attitude toward other people have nothing whatsoever to do with the salvation of his soul…..all the sins a Christian may commit from idolatry to murder would not put his soul in any danger!" W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  4. We believe that such only are real believers as endure unto the end, that their persevering attachment to Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors, that a special providence watches over their welfare, and that they are kept by the power of God through faith unto eternal salvation.http://www.landmarkministries.org/lbtswp.html#H Landmark Baptist Theological Seminary 1909 Thomas Rd. 6. Salvation By Faith – “Faith” Passages • The Obedient Believer IS Secure!!!! • John 4:13,14 • John 6:35-40, 44-51 • John 7:37,38 • John 10:25-30 • Romans 8:28-39 • 2 Tim 1:12; • 1 Peter 1:5 • 1 John 3:14 • 1 John 4:13 • 1 John 5:13 We accept them ALL! Hebrews 13:5,6 Which passage teaches that it is impossible for a believer to become an UNBELIEVER? W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  7. 1. A child of God who does not abide in Christ will be lost (John 15; Romans 11) 2. A child of God can become an unbeliever and depart from God (Hebrews 3; 6; 10). 3. One having been justified can again be entangled in sin so as to be lost (I Corinthians 10; Galatians and 2 Peter) W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  8. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  9. John 15:1-10 (NKJV) 1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  10. John 15:1-10 (NKJV) 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 9 "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  11. ____ Never Saved To Begin With? ____ Not eternally lost, but rather JUST a loss of rewards? ____ A person who CEASES TO ABIDE in Christ and is LOST W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  12. IF (John 15:6,7) - G1437 eaneh-an‘from Greek 1487 (ei) and Greek 302 (an); • A conditional particle; in case that, provided, etc.; often used in connection with other particles to denote indefiniteness or uncertainty – (Strong’s) W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  13. These branches are CLEAN people “IN CHRIST” (2) • The branch, (person) that does not bear fruit is “taken AWAY!” (From whom?) (2) • The branch, (person) who does NOT abide IN Christ is “cast out and is WITHERED, (can’t wither if NEVER ALIVE) and then gathered to be BURNED!” (burned???) W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  14. Unfruitful – (John 15:2,4,5,10-12, 17; cf. Mat 25:24-30; 2 Peter 1:8-10; 1 John 3:14) • The one who does NOT abide, (i.e. remain or continue) in Christ – (John 15:4-7,10; 2 John 1:9-11; Rom 11:19-23) • One devoid of spiritual life – (John 15:6; Luke 15:24,32) • One gathered and burned? (John 15:6; Luke 12:46; Rev 21:8) W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  15. 1 Corinthians 3:6-15 (NKJV) 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  16. 1 Corinthians 3:6-15 (NKJV) 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. His work, (those whom he has converted to Christ), as a preacher can be lost! W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  17. The one that suffers loss but is still saved is NOT the person cut off from Christ in John 15 and Romans 11 Philippians 4:1 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 John 15:1-10 Romans 11:17-22 Planting & Watering Building upon a foundation W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  18. Romans 11:17-23 (NKJV) [17] And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, [18] do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. [19] You will say then, "Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in." • Branches can be broken off!! • How can a thing be broken off of something it was not a part of? • What does being “broken off indicate?? W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  19. Romans 11:17-23 (NKJV) [20] Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. [21] For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. [22] Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. [23] And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  20. Romans 11:17-23 (NKJV) • Some were broken off because of unbelief – [20] • Those who stand by faith must not be haughty, but fear. [20] W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  21. Haughty An arrogant, high minded attitude. But Fear To be seized with alarm, to be afraid, • Boast not against the natural branches – 18 • The natural branches were cut off because of unbelief – 20 • To think that they could NOT BE CUT OFF would be “HAUGHTY!” • If (eh-an; conditional particle to denote indefiniteness, Strong’s) they did not continue in His goodness they too would be cut off!! – 21, 22 • If the OSAS position were true – there would be NO NEED to fear!! W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  22. Romans 11:17-23 (NKJV) • Some were broken off because of unbelief – [20] • Those who stand by faith must not be haughty, but fear. [20] • Those standing by faith must continue in His goodness [21,22] • If they did NOT continue in His goodness – they would be CUT OFF – [22] • Those who have been cut off would be grafted in AGAIN - if they did not continue in unbelief - [23] W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  28. Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, Hebrews 3:12-14 (NKJV) Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; [13] but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  29. Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) [14] Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. [15] For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  30. Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, Hebrews 3:1 (NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, Hebrews 10:22-23 (NKJV) [22] let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  31. BEWARE!! • A child of God CAN become an unbeliever and depart from God! • A child of God CAN become hardened through the deceitfulness of sin!! • Being a partaker of Christ is conditioned upon the continuance of a steadfast faith!! • Is ONE who has departed from the living God SAVED?? Hebrews 3:12-14 (NKJV) [12] Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; [13] but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  32. [Barnes; Heb 3:6] - If we hold fast - A leading object of this Epistle is to guard those to whom it was addressed against the danger of apostasy. Hence, this is introduced on all suitable occasions, and the apostle here says, that the only evidence which they could have that they belonged to the family of Christ, would be that they held fast the confidence which they had unto the end. If they did not do that, it would demonstrate that they never belonged to his family, for evidence of having belonged to his household was to be furnished only by perseverance to the end. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  33. Heb 3:17-19 (NKJV) Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? [18] And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? [19] So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Hebrews 4:1 (NKJV) Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. Hebrews 4:11 (NKJV) Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  34. “If a child of God could fall!” – This is just a hypothetical statement Why would God warn His children of a hypothetical danger that is an impossibility?? W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  35. “The Hebrew writer is talking to those who are not Christians!” Why would God warn those who were NOT His children of the danger of apostasy?? W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  36. Hebrews 6:4-8 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, [6] if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. [7] For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; [8] but if it bears thorns and briars, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  37. Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, • G5461 – φωτίζω phōtizō • “4) to enlighten, spiritually, imbue with saving knowledge • 4a) to instruct, to inform, teach • 4b) to give understanding to”(Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament.663). W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  38. Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, Hebrews 10:32 (NKJV) But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, [5461]you endured a great struggle with sufferings: W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  39. Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, Strong’s G1089 - γεύομαι Geuomai - ghyoo'-om-ahee A primary verb; to taste; by implication to eat; figuratively to experience (good or ill): - eat, taste. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  40. Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, Hebrews 2:9 (NKJV) But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  41. Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, Ephes. 2:8-9 (NKJV) [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, [9] not of works, lest anyone should boast. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  42. Salvation By Grace Through Faith – What is The Gift? And that (kai touto). Neuter, not feminine tauteô, and so refers not to pistis (feminine) or to charis (feminine also), but to the act of being saved by grace conditioned on faith on our part.(A.T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament, p. 525). What is the gift, what is “IT”- (“It is the gift . . . not “they are”) Grace – Faith, Salvation that comes by grace through faith? W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  43. Have Become Partakers Of The Holy Spirit, • And Have Tasted The Good Word Of God • And [have tasted] The Powers Of The Age To Come, Hebrews 6:4-5 (NKJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, [5] and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  44. There is no ‘if’ in the Greek in this place • Literally, “and having fallen away.” - (see ASV; NAU; YLT, etc.) • “To Renew them again to repentance” requires that they had in the past repented!! (You cannot restore that which has never been!!) Hebrews 6:6 (NKJV) [6] if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  45. “Nevertheless our translators, following Beza, who without any authority from the ancient MSS hath inserted in his version the word, ‘if,’ have rendered the clause, ‘if they fall away;’ that this text might not appear to contradict the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints” (James MacKnight [Presybterian], Apostolical Epistles, 532). Hebrews 6:6 (NKJV) [6] if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  46. For it is impossible for those who were . . . to renew them again to repentance, (6:4,6) Hebrews 6:6 (NKJV) [6] if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. • These individuals, who in the past were saved, have rejected the Christ, the cross and the New Covenant and returned to the Old Law. • It is possible for truly saved persons to harden their hearts so as to become insensible to the influence of truth. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  47. “Owen says, ‘The persons here intended are not true and sincere believers…’ But all this is clearly wrong, and contrary to the plainest sense of the terms here used. The writer even heaps clause upon clause to show that no such shallow tasting is intended. And the whole contextual argument is against the view, for it is the very fact of those persons having veritably entered in the spiritual life, which makes it impossible to renew them afresh if they shall fall away. If they have never entered it, if they are unregenerate, what possible logic is it, or even common sense at all, . . . (Henry Alford, Alford’s Greek Testament, Exegetical and Critical Commentary, Volume IV, Page 113). W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  48. “. . . to say that their shallow taste and partial apprehension, make it impossible to renew them…If they never have believed, never have been regenerated, how can it be more difficult to renew them to repentance, than the heathen or any unregenerate person? Our landmark of exegesis must be to hold fast to the plain simple sense of the passage, and recognize the fact that the persons are truly the partakers of spiritual life—regenerate by the Holy Spirit” (Henry Alford, Alford’s Greek Testament, Exegetical and Critical Commentary, Volume IV, Page 113). W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  49. Hebrews 10:22-39 (NKJV) [22] let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. [24] And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, [25] not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. W. 65th St. church of Christ - February 18, 2007

  50. Hebrews 10:22-39 (NKJV) [26] For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, [27] but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. [28] Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. [29] Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
