Strategy 1: Inquiry Learning (open discovery or play) Children learn through their own spontaneous questions and activities Usually a beginning activity Requires more classtime Students will be on many levels of learning Time and accountability restrains limit this type of strategy Ex: Explore levers and balance. Given a variety of objects students work in small groups to explore how to create levers and how to balance their lever. Teacher does not give direction but helps with the question and observation of the creations. Strategies for Teaching Science

  10. Strategy 2: Guided Discovery This strategy is essentially the same as Inquiry. The difference is in the role of the teacher. Here, the teacher guides or directs the students attention through questions, discussions, diagrams or equipment usage to obtain the desired result. Ex: In learning about materials that reflect or absorb light or sound, I focus the students on examining what reflects light energy. This provides the students with a learning framework for their various materials.

Strategy 3: Problem Solving Common steps include: Identify and clarify a question or problem Gather relevant information Identify a potential solution Test the potential solution Other methods include GRASP to be discussed next day. Ex: How could one identify and classify the different types of matter?

  12. Strategy 4: The Learning Cycle: ICA ICA: Inquiry, Conceptual development and Application This strategy has many other names but the basis is the same. The cycle begins with inquiry and exploration of the items or concepts, the second phase has the teacher involved and a type of guided inquiry is preformed and finally application usually in the form of some type of problem solving is completed to ensure learning has occurred. Ex: Examine various materials with a flashlight. Teacher discusses the idea of reflection and absorption. Students complete an application where they determine which of the materials would make the best eye patch.
