  5. The new Chapter sinceSoERNo. 9Tourism; but why? Tourism is a very important economic sector in Austria(18.000 Mio. EUR; 7,5% of the GDP; 130 Mio. overnight-stay) Tourism in Austria is directly connected to the environment(skiing, hiking, mountain-biking, lake-side tourism, etc.) Sensitive Areas are effected(high alpine areas, complex eco-systems of alpine lakes, etc.) Direct environmental effects(traffic, energy consumption, waste, artificial snow, etc.)in-direct environmental effects(touristic infrastructure, like cable cars, Skiing slopes, etc.)

  6. Data collection Compilation of existing data(energy, traffic, noise, waste, etc.) Strategies how to allocate effects fromtourism(statistical methods, calculations, surveys, etc.) Results: - Impact of tourism is visible - ‘Need for action’ is obvious - Strategies can be developed - Impact of adaptations can be calculated

  7. Benefits New concepts(e.g. car-free villages) New ideas(environmentally-sensitive tourism, revival of unique local cuisine, etc.) New communications messages(tourists prefer a clean and healthy environment, better image, etc.) Last but not least: Higher turnover per tourist 
