  2. Holden’s Diary #2 Throughout the novel Holden attempts to call many people for help. Holden wants to call Jane several times, but he never does. He also wants to talk to his sister Phoebe, but he is afraid his parents will answer so he doesn’t call her. These are two people that he cares a great deal for. He feels like they are his life lines.

  3. Holden’s Diary Write in your journal who your life line is. Who would you call for help when you needed it the most and why? Who wouldn’t you call and why? Try to mimic Holden’s style of speech as you write. Label this, Holden’s Diary # 2. (Minimum of 5 sentences) Example- I feel like calling my Dad right now, but it is probably too goddamn late and all. He is always someone I can talk to. He isn’t anything like that phony bastard Raymond.

CITR Jigsaw Activity • You will be placed into groups of 5 or 6 . • Each group will be assigned either chapter 18, 19, 20, or 21. • Your group must read the chapter and come up with 5 questions about the plot. • Each group must also create a written summary that explains what happens in the chapter and answers the 5 questions you created • You must have the questions written out and hand them to the teacher.

Group Roles • One person in the group will read the chapter aloud. • One person will create the 5 questions. • One/two people will write the chapter summary • One person will present their summary to the class so they can answer the questions your group created. • Everyone in each groupwill be monitored and graded.

  7. Pronoun Review • A pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun. You use pronouns like "he," "which," "none," and "you" to make your sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive. • A pronoun usually refers to something earlier in the text (its antecedent) and must agree in number — singular/plural — with the thing to which it refers.

  8. You Try It • Identify the pronoun and the antecedent in the following sentences. • Somebody has left their bag on the floor. • President Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address in 1863. • The clerk does most of the work in his office.

  9. Reflexive Pronouns • reflexive (adj.) [grammar]: reflecting back on the subject, like a mirror • We use a reflexive pronoun when we want to refer back to the subject of the sentence or clause. Reflexive pronouns end in "-self" (singular) or "-selves" (plural). • There are eight reflexive pronouns. Five are singular and three are plural

  10. Singular/Plural Reflexive Pronouns • The five singular reflexive pronouns are myself, yourself, himself, herself, and itself. • The three plural reflexive pronouns are ourselves, yourselves, andthemselves.

  12. Add the Singular Reflexive Pronoun • I wondered about that ___________. • Adam hurt ___________ playing basketball. • The calculator will turn___________ when it is not being used. • Tierra dusted _________ off after falling on the floor.

Who Verses Whom • Use who when you are referring to the subject of a clause/sentence. • Use whom when you are referring to the object of a clause/sentence. • The subject of the sentence is the person doing something, and the object of the sentence is having something done to them. • If I step on your face, then I am the subject and your face is the object.

  14. Still Confused? • Like whom, the pronoun him ends with m. When you're trying to decide whether to use who or whom, ask yourself if the answer to the question would be he or him. • Example: Who stepped on my face? • Answer: He did. • He does not end in m so you would not use whom.

  17. Its Verses It’s It’s is a contraction for it is, or it has. Tip-If you replace it’s in you sentence with it is or it has, then your word is it’s. If you can’t, then your word is its. Example: It’s been a very good year for the Bulls so far. You could also say it has been a very good year for the Bulls so far. That is how you know it’s is the right word

  18. It’s Verses Its Its is a possessive pronoun meaning, more or less, belonging to it. Tip-If you can replace its with the word her and the sentence still makes sense, its is your word. Example-The dog chased its tail. You could also say the dog chased her tail. Since this sentence still makes sense, its is your word

  19. You Try It Chicago is a large city, and (its/it’s) one of the biggest tourist attractions in the United States. Chicago is also famous for (its/it’s) pizza and hot dogs. The goldfish was found dead in (its/it’s) bowl. (Its/It’s) now been flushed down the toilet.
