Explore the dual modes of revelation - natural and special - concerning the universe's design and God's divine messages recorded in the Bible. Discover conflicts with scientific theories, the concept of Yom, the Gap Theory, and theistic evolution.
E N D
Background • Natural (or general) revelation • Special revelation
Natural Revelation • God revealing Himself to man through the physical universe and the moral order (Rom 1:18-21, Ps 19:1-6) • Reveals the universe has a Master Designer • Subservient to special revelation • Does not provide knowledge about God or character • Does not reveal man’s sinful nature, need for a Savior • Implies a Deistic position
Observations about Special Revelation • The Bible contains the divine words of God • Inspired by God and is authoritative in every way • God revealed and man recorded His Word • The Bible records God’s acts as He intervenes into human history • Theophanies (veiled appearances of Himself) • Smoke, fire, clouds, wind, Christ!! • Direct communication • Miracles • The Bible answers the basic questions of life • Why does mankind need to be saved? • How can mankind be saved?
The Age-Old Conflict • What happens when the text of Scripture disagree with the theories of science? Which takes precedent? • Before 1800’s – Scripture • After 1800’s – Science • How to reconcile? • Reinterpret Scripture to agree with science • Most prominent disagreement: age of the earth • Resulting compromise has far-reaching implications!!
Double Revelation Theory • Natural revelation and special revelation are equally authoritative • Theologians speak for special revelation • Scientists speak for natural revelation • Conflicts between the Bible and nature – special revelation must yield to natural revelation • Leads to Biblical “reinterpretation” to “reconcile” Bible and science Key point: Science is constantly changing and fraught with errors; the Bible is constant and inerrant
Yom (Translated “Day”) • Daylight (Gen 1:5, 13) • 24 hour day (Matt 17:1, Luke 24:21) • A time set apart for a purpose (Lev 23:27) • Longer than 24 hours 2291 total references in OT
Evidences for a Literal 24-Hour Day Conclusion: The literal interpretation of the creation account is the only version of origins that is supported textually and logically
So Where’s the Time? • If the straight forward reading of the Biblical text implies the 6 days of Genesis 1 are 24-hour days, how do those who believe in theistic evolution find the time in the Biblical record? • Before the creation week • During the creation week • After the creation week
Gap Theory “In the far-distant, dateless past, God created a perfect heaven and perfect earth. Satan was ruler of the earth, which was peopled by a race of men without any souls. Eventually, Satan, who dwelled in a garden of Eden composed of minerals (Ez. 28), rebelled by desiring to become like God (Isa. 14). Because of Satan's fall, sin entered the universe and brought on the earth God's judgment in the form of a flood (indicated by the water of Gen. 1:2), and then a global ice-age when the light and heat from the sun were somehow removed. All the plant, animal, and human fossils upon the earth today date from this ‘Lucifer's Flood,’ and do not bear any genetic relationship with the plants, animals, and fossils living upon the earth today.” (Unformed and Unfilled. Weston W. Fields, Presbyterian & Reformed, Phillipsburg, New Jersey, 1976, p. 7.)
Conclusion The literal interpretation of the creation account is the only version of origin that is supported textually, logically, and scientifically
