  1. Science Safety Rules! You must score 90 or above before you may participate in the laboratory science activities. If labs occur before your completion of this requirement you may receive a zero for activities you have not participated in!

  2. Start Out Right! • Always get teacher’s permission before attempting any laboratory exploration. • Read procedures carefully. • Pay attention to safety information and caution statements. • Know safety symbols (look up or ask). • Report accidents to teacher immediately not matter how minor.

  5. Eye Safety • Wear safety goggles when working around chemicals, acids, bases, or any type of flame or heating device. • Notify teacher immediately. • Flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes. • Avoid wearing contact lenses during the laboratory.

  6. Safety Equipment • Know location of fire alarms, fire blankets, eyewash fountains, and fire extinguishers. • Know your teacher’s procedures for chemical spills, completion clean-up, and storing of lab materials when the lab is over. • Maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times. (NO PLAYING AROUND DURING THE LAB NO MATTER HOW SIMPLE)!!!

  7. Neatness • Keep books and papers in front of the room away from the work area. • Tie back long hair, and secure loose sleeves or other loose articles of clothing. • Remove dangling jewelry. • No open-toed shoes or sandals. • ABOLSOUTELY NO FOOD OR DRINKS!!!

  8. Neatness • ABSOLUTELY NO APPLICATION OF COSEMETICS!!! • Hair products may be flammable and should not be worn while working near an open flame. • No use of cologne during the lab!

  9. Sharp/Pointed Objects • Use knives and other sharp instruments with extreme care. • Never cut objects while holding them in your hands. • Always cut objects away from you body. • Place objects on a suitable work surface for cutting.

  10. Heat • Wear safety goggles when using a heating device or a flame. • Use an electric hot plate as a heat source instead of an open flame when possible. • Always angle the test tube and other heating materials away from the eyes of yourself and other observers. • Wear heat resistant gloves when working with heated objects.

  11. Electricity • Place electric cords where others will not trip over it. • Do not use equipment with damaged cords. • Be sure hands are dry and electrical equipment is in the “off” position before unplugging or plugging it in. • Turn off and unplug electrical equipment when you are finished.

  12. Chemical • Wear safety goggles when handling any potentially dangerous chemicals, acids, or bases. • Consider all chemicals as dangerous! • Wear an apron and protective gloves when working with acids or bases or whenever told. • Report all spills. Rinse spills of the body or clothing for 5 minutes while calling your teacher.

  13. Chemical Cont’d • Never mix chemicals unless instructed by your teacher. • Never taste, touch, smell chemicals unless you are directed to do so. • Before working with a flammable liquid or gas, check for the presence of any source of flame, spark, or heat.

  14. Animal Safety • Always obtain teacher’s permission before bringing any animal into the school building. • No handling of animals in the classroom unless instructed by your teacher. • Always treat animals carefully and respectfully. • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any animal.

  15. Plant safety • Do not eat any part of a plant or plant seed used in the laboratory. • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any part of a plant. • Do not remove any remaining (extra) plant, animal, or chemicals from the lab classroom. All objects must be disposed of properly. • Do not pick any wild plants unless instructed to do so.

  16. Glassware safety • Examine proper size of glassware before use and lay out in order of procedures. • Glassware must be clean and free of chips and cracks. • Report damaged glassware to you teacher immediately. Do not use it! • Use only heat-resistant glassware when heating objects or chemicals.
